Sebastian Munster (geb. 1488 in Ingelheim, gest. 1552 in Basel), der seit 1529 Professor an der Universitat Basel war, gehort zu den prominenten Figuren des Humanismus im deutschsprachigen Raum. Sein fiktiver Dialog zwischen einem Christen und einem Juden uber den Messias erschien 1529 erstmals in hebraischer Sprache, zehn Jahre spater in erweiterter und zusatzlich um eine lateinische Ubersetzung angereicherter Form. Das lange Zeit wenig beachtete Werk beschaftigt sich mit einer zentralen Frage der Religionswahrheit in der Reformationszeit, namlich der Weigerung der Juden, die Messianitat Jesu anzuerkennen, und stattdessen auf dem Glauben an eine noch zu erwartende Erloserfigur zu bestehen. Munsters Text, der von seinem intensiven Studium judischer Quellen zeugt, spiegelt die Ambivalenz etlicher Gelehrter der Reformationszeit gegenuber dem Judentum, die zwischen Faszination und Herablassung schwankt. Eine indirekt besonders fatale Auswirkung des Messias-Dialoges durfte gewesen sein, dass der breite Raum, der dem judischen Dialogpartner hier gegeben wird, Martin Luther als unzulassige Aufwertung des Judentums erschien, was ihn als Reaktion zu seiner folgenreichen Brandschrift Von den Juden und ihren Lugen von 1543 veranlasste. Mit der Gegenuberstellung des faksimilierten hebraischen Textes von Munster aus dem Jahr 1539 und einer erstmaligen deutschen Ubersetzung durch Rainer Wenzel erhalt die heutige Offentlichkeit einen wichtigen Einblick in das komplexe christlich-judische Verhaltnis des 16. Jahrhunderts. Eine Einfuhrung des Munster-Experten Stephen G. Burnett macht zudem die Bedeutung dieser Schrift in ihrem historischen Kontext und ihren historischen Auswirkungen deutlich. Unmittelbarer Anlass zu diesem Band ist die Sonderausstellung 'Munster gefelt mir wol' - Sebastian Munster und Martin Luther, die aus Anlass des Reformationsjubilaums vom 6. Mai bis 10. Dezember 2017 im Museum bei der Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim am Rhein zu sehen sein wird.
About the Author: Der Herausgeber Alfred Bodenheimer, geb. 1965, ist Professor fur Religionsgeschichte und Literatur des Judentums und Leiter des Zentrums fur Judische Studien an der Universitat Basel. In seiner Forschung geht er religiosen und literarischen Narrativen und Figura- tionen des Judischen nach. Zudem ist er Verfasser von Kriminalromanen mit dem Ermittler Rabbi Gabriel Klein.
