Concio por iscaricare le lor mercanzie. Ma se allora Roma fece festa, e per ben centosessantaquattro anni si giovo delle comodità di quel porto, oggi per ve rità. Dee rattristarsi, oggi che (se dice vero una mo lesta novella che ci è giunta alle orecchie) si vuol guastare, e forse anche ridurre a niente quel bello e comodissimo porto col gittarvi sopra un ponte di ferro, che tagliandolo quasi pel mezzo, verrà. Tutto a de formarlo, con rammarico di quanti hanno a cuore 1' ornamento e l'utile della patria. Qualche anno in dietro, parto di cervelli bizzarri, fu proposto di ao crescere il numero delle case di Roma costruendosi una borgata ne' prati di Castello, per sopperire al bisogno della popolazione crescente, e far diminuire il doloroso rincarare delle pigioni; e quasi nel vasto spazio delle gloriose sue mura la città. Nostra non avesse luoghi da fabbricarvi case e strade e palagi (e si che dessa è per due terze parti tutta messa ad orti, a ville ed a vignel), si vagheggiava il pazzo pensiero di cacciare il popolo colaggiu in quelle fo gne soggette alle inondazioni del Tevere, mentre di lieti poggi e salubri la nostra Roma in più parti s' al legra. Allora fu gridato esser necessario un ponte che congiungesse a Roma stessa questo aborto di Roma, e fu detto di volerlo fare colà. Sulla piazza Nicosia, nel luogo di quella casa che surge di costa al col legio clementino, e si aggiungevano conforti alla im presa dicendo come nel tempo delle feste del Vaticano dovesse tornar comodissimo questo ponte, perchè le genti si potessero per via più breve tragittare a san Pietro. Il pensiero della trista e malsana borgata, Dio grazia, andò in fumo; ma per nostra mala ventura ostinato si mantiene quello dell'inutile ponte; chè anzi in prati g1a si è aperta una via diritta che ri.
