Gli scritti del Mamiani esermteranno a questo fine un salutevole influsso sugli studi dei giovani, e proveranno ad un tempo che il culto delle ottime lettere non torna a sca pito del profondo pensare, e non reca nocumento alla costanza delle politiche opinioni. Vedendo infatti in un sol corpo rac colte le cose da lui dettate in mezzo a cure] vertiginoso incal zarsi di avvenimenti straordinarii di cui fummo spettatori nel l'ultimo quinquennio, nessuno potrà non ammirare la perdu ranza insigne del Pubblicista nostro, che per mutar di venti non piegò costa nè mutò ciglio, e serbò invitta fede ai con vincimenti suoi. Ossequente al senno pratico, che fu gia pre rogativa degli Italiani, e che in quegli ultimi casi sembrò smarrito e disperso, ebbe sempre fisso nell'animo, che in politica il meglio e gran nemico del bene, e non credette bene vero ciò che non era possibile ed asseguibile; parlò un linguaggio solo e nell' esigho quando incerte erano le Spe ranze, e quando spuntarono i lieti albori del sospirato tem po; poscia, allorchè colla Repubblica Francese del 1848 crebbero contro i riformati governi d'italia i pericoli delle sètte rigermoglianti, con penna fatidica pronunziò i mali che Sl apparecchiavano alla patiia vezzeggiando mconsul tamente le novità d' oltremonte e discostandosi dalla nativa spontaneità del nostro rwolgimento; e nel giorno nefa sto in cui le colpe dei regnaton, la levdà del popolo e le nequizie delle fazioni distrussero il Principato, e sfrenando la cmle discordia aprirono le porte all'invasione, alla conqui sta e al servaggio, secolari fati d'italia, protestò dal Campi ilogbo colla eloquenza dell'uomo di Stato e col coraggio del cittadino, facendo indarno, cogli scarsi compagni, ultimo ri puro al gonfiato torrente delle passioni.

Assegnatezza di desideni e liberalità di tolleranza conci liativa tanto più rare e commendabili, in quanto che s' in contrano in uomo percosso dalla domestica tirannia, e che nell' esiglio avea logorata molta porzione della Vita. Sono acerbe le punture dell'esglio, quando Vivo è l'amore della pa tria, e lo sbandeggiamento è premio dell' averla amata con degne opere. Agevolmente si ricevono allora nell' animo preoccupazioni esiziali, per cui la stessa generosa religione della libertà riesce a pernicie della nobil causa. L' errore più comune dei fuorusciti è quello di credersii veri e soli interpreti della Nazione, non pure in ciò che concerne l'uni v\rsale desiderio di più umani istituti, ma eziandio riguardo alle forme che debbono questi assumere e alle vie da eleg gere per ottenerli. Portano fiducia che un medesimo calore d'affetto riscaldi tutta quanta la cittadinanza loro, e che la fac cia lieta a qualsivoglia sacrifizio; costretti a vivere in mezzo ad altri popoli, si avvezzano a loro insaputa a giudicare del popolo loro colle idee di fuori e con quelle che essi vanno idoleggiando. Il desiderio della patria perduta e la bramosia di racquistarla generano in loro una credubtà senza pari: credubtà negli eventi che reputano prossimi, immanchevoli ed accomodati ai loro divisamenti: creduhtà nelle promesse degli estranei, che, nei paesi liberi, quando stanno dal lato della opposizione, non si fanno coscienza di largheggiare in parole per accattare benivoglienza e popolar clientela; ma ove salgano in palazzo, badano agli interesa dello Stato, e si reggono secondo la bilancia di questi, non colle voglie al trui° creduhtà, per ultimo, nelle forze di lor parte e nei riscon tri che ne hanno dai consenzienti o dai pietosi, i quali leniscono agli assenti il dolore colle lusinghe del meglio vicino.
