Was gibt es für Möglichkeiten mit einem mutistischen Kind im Unterricht zu arbeiten? Wie kann das Kind angemessen im Unterricht integriert werden und gibt es spezielle Fördermaßnahmen, die im Unterricht greifen können? In unserem täglichen Miteinander ist die Sprache ein wichtiges Werkzeug, um miteinander zu kommunizieren. Steht uns dieses Werkzeug nicht zur Verfügung, können wir uns mit anderen Menschen nur schwer verständigen und wir erleben uns in sozialen Situationen häufig hilflos und ohnmächtig. Vor allem aber werden Menschen mit einem Gefühl der Ohnmacht konfrontiert, die schweigenden Menschen begegnen. Mutismus ist ein Störungsbild, welches für Menschen, die davon nicht betroffen sind beziehungsweise die diesem Schweigen das erste Mal konfrontiert gegenüberstehen, schwer zu fassen ist. Für einen Außenstehenden ist es kaum nachvollziehbar, weswegen ein Mensch verstummt und sich verbal nicht äußert. Er kann mitunter nicht verstehen, dass eine Person in der Kommunikation mit ihren Mitmenschen nicht spricht, obgleich sie die körperlichen und organischen Voraussetzungen dafür mitbringt. Vor allem Kindergarten und Grundschule, sprich Elementar- und Primarbereich, sind soziale Institutionen, in denen das Kind lernen sollte, soziale Beziehungen aufzubauen und Freundschaften zu schließen. All dies geschieht hauptsächlich über unsere Sprache und durch die Kommunikation miteinander. Vor allem in der Schule stellt das mutistische Kind einen schwerwiegenden Fall für alle Beteiligten dar.
