die naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften sind ein gewichtiger und zugleich der am wenigsten bekannte Teil von Forsters Werk. Darunter sind unveröffentlichte Manuskripte, die sich in der Bibliothek des Naturgeschichtlichen Museums zu Paris befinden. Es handelt sich vor allem um Pflanzenbeschreibungen von der Weltreise 1772-1775 und um allgemeine Vorlesungen über die drei Reiche der Natur an der Universität zu Wilna in den Jahren 1785-1787. Forsters Stellung in den Naturwissenschaften seiner Zeit und eigene Beiträge dazu (botanische und zoologische Erstbeschreibungen, die er gemeinsam mit seinem Vater Johann Reinhold Forster und dem schwedischen Naturforscher Anders Sparrman anfertigte) sind bisher am wenigsten erfaßt. Forster vertrat noch eine enzyklopädische, beschreibende und ordnende Naturkunde wie diejenige Linnés und Buffons. Mit ganzheitlichen Vorstellungen von Natur und Vegetation scheint er aber am Beginn einer Entwicklung zu stehen, die über Alexander von Humboldt zur modernen Pflanzenökologie führte. Die beiden hier vorgelegten Bände zu Forsters Naturkunde stellen die Texte des umfangreich überlieferten Materials einer größeren Leserschaft zur Verfügung, deren Kommentierung in einem Dritten Teil folgen soll. Den Zeitgenossen galt Forster, der Begleiter Cooks und Parteigänger der Ersten Französischen Republik, als guter, lesenswerter Schriftsteller. Aufenthalte in mehreren Ländern, Reisen und ein weiter Korrespondentenkreis in Wissenschaft, Literatur und Politik in ganz Europa gaben Person und Werk europäische Prägung. Die Herausgabe seiner Schriften schafft eine wichtige Grundlage für die Erforschung der Epoche und ermöglicht die Rückkehr des verdrängten und zu Unrecht vergessenen Mannes in die deutsche Lesewelt. Erstmals wird das Gesamtwerk Forsters zugänglich. Es umfaßt Texte in mehreren Sprachen zu so unterschiedlichen Gebieten wie Mineralogie, Botanik, Zoologie, Geographie, Völkerkunde, Geschichte, Politik, Kunsttheorie und Literatur, ferner einen zeitgeschichtlich und literarisch wertvollen Briefwechsel. Politisches und wissenschaftliches Interesse an Forster sowie die unbefriedigende Quellensituation waren Veranlassung dafür, daß die Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin sich 1953 zur Herausgabe einer Gesamtausgabe entschloß, als erster Band konnten 1958 die "Ansichten vom Niederrhein" (Bd. 9) vorgelegt werden. Seitdem sind weitere 16 Bände und ein Teilband (Texte der Revolutionsschriften) erschienen, mehrere davon in verbesserten Nachauflagen. Alle sind von der Fachkritik wie von der breiteren Öffentlichkeit positiv aufgenommen worden und längst Grundlage der Forschung. Die Ausgabe umfaßt zehn Werkbände, je einen Band mit Rezensionen und Tagebüchern und sechs Briefbände. Die Schriften sind in Sachgruppen eingeteilt, die über umfangreiche textkritische Apparate und Erläuterungen verfügen und zahlreiche Beigaben enthalten, u. a. eine Auswahl der Pflanzen-, Tier- und Kartenzeichnungen, Forster-Porträts, Illustrationen der Originalausgaben sowie Faksimiles von Autographen und Titelblätter aller selbständigen Publikationen Forsters.
