About the Book

The history of the Iowa Hill Divide in Placer County, California begins in 1850 with the Gold Rush, even before California became a state. The first school on the Divide opened in 1854, and others soon followed. This book documents the rich history of these schools and includes:

- Histories and maps of the six school districts on the Divide: Iowa Hill, Wisconsin Hill, Monona Flat, Red Point (Humbug), Damascus, and Prospect Hill

- History of each of the five school buildings in Iowa Hill, including the solar-powered school

- Complete lists of students, teachers, and enrollment for every year the school was open from 1926 until it closed in 2010, along with two of the four Independent Study years

- Extensive historical lists of students, teachers, and enrollment back to the gold rush era

- Biographies of selected students, teachers, and administrators

- Numerous photographs, some published for the first time, plus maps and other illustrations

- Chronology of the schools on the Divide

The Second Edition enhances the sections on the Remodeled Schoolhouse in Iowa Hill (1981-1984 years) and the Red Point School District, including expanded student rosters for both and a photo of the schoolhouse in Humbug Canyon.

About the Author: Robin Yonash moved to Kings Hill, about 5 miles southwest of Iowa Hill, in 1949 with her grandparents, Frank and Esther Yonash. She rode her horse Kit, accompanied by her dog Patty, to attend the Iowa Hill School from September 1950 through October 1956, when she transferred to Foresthill, where she graduated as the Salutatorian in June 1957. After graduating as Valedictorian from high school at Mt. St. Mary's in Grass Valley in 1961 (a boarding school at that time), she went on to receive a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of California, Davis in 1965. Following a successful career in the computer field, Robin retired in 1998 and moved back to her beloved Sierra Nevada foothills-but not all the way to Iowa Hill. Having become addicted to electricity and telephones, she compromised on the Colfax area. However, she still considers Iowa Hill to be her home town and is involved with the community, serving on the Board of the Iowa Hill Community Cemetery, developing an updated transcription of the Cemetery, writing this book, and attending the occasional Taco Night. In addition, she is presently working on Volumes 2 and 3 of this series: Towns and People of the Iowa Hill Divide, due to be released in the Spring of 2016, and Gold & Fire: A History of the Iowa Hill Divide, anticipated in late 2016.
