Oktober 1806, ein Tag von weltgeschichtlicher Bedeutung, war angebrochen. Wenige Stunden später, nach dem Weichen von Dunkelheit und dichtem Frühnebel, sollte die Sonne einen schönen, warmen Herbsttag überstrahlen, an dem sich die Geschicke von Menschen und Staaten durch tausendfaches Morden auf zwei Schlachtfeldern entschieden." So beginnt Wolf-Jörg Schuster ein Kapitel über den entscheidenden Tag im Zuge der Ereignisse um die Schlacht bei Jena und Auerstedt. Und es sind zwei Dinge, die wir daraus lesen können. Zum einen der Hinweis auf ein weltgeschichtliches Ereignis, zum anderen der Hinweis auf zumindest zwei Schlachtfelder. Dies ist notwendig, denn obwohl der Name "Jena und Auerstedt" ja klar mindestens eine Doppelschlacht impliziert, so ist die öffentliche Wahrnehmung doch eine stark davon abweichende und lediglich auf die Schlacht in den Gebieten zwischen Jena und Cospeda beschränkt, rund um den heutigen Napoleonstein. Viel wichtiger ist jedoch die Bezeichnung als weltgeschichtliche Bedeutung, zeigt sie doch deutlich einen seit einigen Jahren stattfinden Wandel in der historischen Einordnung und Bewertung der Ereignisse um das Jahr 1806. Waren bisher die Ereignisse 1789 und 1813/1815 die in der Historiographie am stärksten hervorgehobenen, wenn die Französische Revolution im Allgemeinen und die Rolle Napoleons im Speziellen betrachtet wurden, so rückt doch immer mehr die Schlacht bei Jena und Auerstedt in den Fokus der Betrachtung. Mit der vernichtenden Niederlage der Preußen, die daraufhin bis zu den eigenen Reformen als Großmacht jeglichen politischen Einfluss verloren, dem im August zuvor erfolgten Ende des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation und der Gründung
