15. September 2008: Lehman Brothers, eine der weltweit größten Investmentbanken bricht zusammen und gibt damit den Auslöser für die akute Phase der Finanzmarktkrise. Viele Menschen verloren ihr angelegtes Geld, Vermögensgegenstände verloren an Wert und durch die Insolvenzen diverser Unternehmen steigt die Arbeitslosigkeit. Die aus diesen Ereignissen folgende Verunsicherung in der Bevölkerung führt unmittelbar zu einer sinkenden Nachfrage nach Konsum- und Investitionsgütern weltweit. Da Deutschland lange Zeit Exportweltmeister war und immer noch mit an der Spitze steht, trifft die gesunkene Nachfrage aus dem Ausland den deutschen Export besonders stark. Dies hat wiederum katastrophale Folgen für die Transportwirtschaft. Im Besonderen ist hierbei die Schifffahrtsbranche betroffen, da rund 90 Prozent des weltweiten Handels über diese abgewickelt wird. Hieraus folgt, dass auch die Nachfrage nach zu transportierenden Schiffen zurückgeht, wodurch ein enormer Werteverlust dieser zu verzeichnen ist. Der extreme Preisverfall ist zudem darin begründet, dass die Schifffahrtsbranche in den letzten Jahrzehnten sehr starke Wachstumsraten verzeichnete und aus diesem Grunde verstärkt der Bau von neuen Schiffen in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Demnach sind trotz sinkender Nachfrage nach Schiffen die Orderbücher der Werften gut gefüllt, was das Angebot an Schiffen zusätzlich erhöht. Die Auswirkungen der durch die Finanzmarktkrise gesunkenen Schiffspreise führen unter anderem bei den schiffsfinanzierenden Banken in Deutschland, wobei diese, angeführt von der HSH-Nordbank, rund 40 Prozent der Weltschifffahrt finanzieren, zu einer erhöhten Eigenkapitalhinterlegungspflicht. Diese trägt wiederum dazu bei, dass die Banken zurückhaltender bei der Kreditvergabe geworden sind. Die Autorin zeigt auf, dass die Auswirkungen der Finanzmarktkrise auf die Schifffahrtsbranche und somit auf die Schiffswerte zu der so häufig in den Medien genannten Kreditklemme beitragen.
