About the Book

Né à Florence le 3 mai 1469 au sein d'une famille noble, Nicolas Machiavel est un philosophe et humaniste italien de la Renaissance. Il s'illustre principalement comme théoricien dans l'art de la politique (le sceptre) et de la guerre (le glaive).
Car il y a deux manières pour gouverner et combattre: l'une avec les lois l'autre avec la force. Si la première est celle des hommes, la seconde est celle des bêtes. Mais Machiavel l'a bien compris, l'une ne va pas sans l'autre. Pour cette raison, cette édition regroupe cette double vision avec Le Prince & l'Art de la Guerre.
Avec Le Prince, Machiavel donne aux hommes de volonté les moyens de gagner et conserver le pouvoir. Pour rédiger une telle oeuvre, l'auteur s'inspire tant de l'histoire antique que de sa connaissance dans l'action des grands hommes . Machiavel possède en effet une profonde expérience dans ce qui fait la nature des princes: de 1498 à 1512, il est employé comme fonctionnaire par la République florentine, notamment comme légat auprès des puissances étrangères comme la France, l'Allemagne ou César Borgia, il est également nommé à la tête de la seconde chancellerie.
Mais ironie de l'histoire, c'est en exil que Machiavel rédige l'essentiel du manuscrit du Prince, En novembre 1512, quelques mois après l'instauration d'une monarchie à Florence par les Médicis, il est en effet déchu de sa charge. Puis, en décembre, après la découverte d'un complot ourdi par certaines de ses accointances, il est emprisonné dans sa métairie de Sant'Andrea. C'est donc en ce lieu qu'il écrit le Prince. La rédaction en est presque achevée en décembre 1513 comme en témoigne la lettre qu'il adresse à son ami Francesco Vettori:
Le soir venu, [...] je pénètre dans le sanctuaire antique des grands hommes de l'antiquité [...]. Je ne crains pas de m'entretenir avec eux, et de leur demander compte de leurs actions. Ils me répondent avec bonté; et pendant quatre heures j'échappe à tout ennui, j'oublie tous mes chagrins, je ne crains plus la pauvreté, et la mort ne saurait m'épouvanter; je me transporte en eux tout entier.
Parce que l'ouvrage ne donnait pas de conseils moraux aux princes comme les traités classiques adressés à des rois, et qu'au contraire il conseillait dans certains cas des actions contraires aux bonnes moeurs, Machiavel a souvent été accusé d'immoralisme.Pourtant, bien plus qu'un manuel du despote, Machiavel développe des idées fortement imprégnées du bien public et pose les bases solides de la république de Florence.
