About the Book

A father and son return to Italy, the country of their births, to reacquaint themselves with the family they have not seen in thirty years.

Though Nick has had a difficult relationship with his father and has no interest in visiting their birthplace in the Calabria region of southern Italy, he considers his father's invitation an opportunity to see the famous tourist sites of Italy free of cost. But the tour soon becomes a challenging journey. Father and son argue frequently over the itinerary. Nick realizes that he has blundered by letting his seventy-four-year-old father book the trip without making reservations for hotels or trains. Nick begins to worry about his father's health and his unreliable memory.

Eventually Nick succeeds in visiting the famous sites in Milan, Bergamo, and Florence. He enjoys the world-famous museums, churches, and monuments and feasts on the unique Italian cuisine of northern Italy while navigating the muddied waters of lingering family feuds and conflicts. In Bergamo, his cherished Aunt Leti reveals the bare outlines of a complex and painful family history Nick was not aware of. But it is in Calabria where early memories, long repressed, begin to emerge in startling ways. He and his childhood friend embark on an exploration of a part of Italy rarely visited by tourists. Coastal and mountain towns that go back in history to the Trojan War or the time of Hannibal and have changed little since then. Le Castella, Crotone, Stilo, Gerace, Tropea, Locri, Santa Severina. Quaint seaside villages and beaches on both the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts that rival those found on the coast of California. Ancient hidden towns nestled deep in the thickly forested mountains where wolves still roam along with the 'Ndrangheta, the dreaded Calabrian mafia. Nick also enjoys the unique cuisine and the surprisingly good homemade wine. As he learns more about his childhood, Nick realizes that the trip has evolved into a journey of personal discovery--one in which a lost self, buried on the day he set foot on American soil, begins to surface.

But unknown to Nick, his father has a different agenda. For him, tourist sites are less interesting than they are useful as the bait that lured his son to join him on the trip. His father is on a mission. He has returned seeking redemption. The girl he fell in love with when he was a young man is still alive. He wants to meet her and ask that she forgive him for his sinful actions. But his greatest struggle is to somehow find the courage to reveal to his son the secret he has kept hidden from Nick since his birth.

From stunning, sun-baked vistas to villages that seem frozen in time, The Scent of Ginestra examines timeless questions regarding the father and son relationship while introducing the reader to the mysteries of a wild, lush, and rugged region with its proud and resilient people.
