About the Book

Cooke, Philip Saint George, was an American military officer(1809--1895). He was graduated at West Point in 1827 and rose to the rank of brigadier-general. In the Mexican war he commanded a regiment in the city of Mexico, and in the Civil War sided with the Union and greatly distinguished himself in the Peninsular campaign. He was the author of works on tactics, and of Scenes and Adventures in the ArmyConquest of New Mexico and California (1878).
