About the Book

David was commended by the Almighty God as being a man after His heart. This is a strange commendation for a man who was a chronic womanizer, an unrepentant adulterer, and a murderous mastermind. There are some deep and poignant lessons in David's life that the modern church desperately needs today. For starters, this rough-mannered shepherd boy turned king was one of the few men in history to petition God with an unusual demand. He wanted to go deeper than being a witness to the works of God in his time. He wanted much more than a temporary crown and testimonies of God's faithfulness. David wanted to know the precepts of God and he gave voice to this desire. David wanted to know how God thinks!

Perhaps it was all those lonely nights in the field as a shepherd boy under the starlit skies that allowed him to express the inquisitive bent of his mind. David listened with intensity as day after day gave voice to glorious revelations about the greatness of God, and he increased his knowledge night after night as the whole of creation poured out the wisdom of God. David could read God's architecture of thought from the harmony, order, and beauty of nature. But the visible world could not satisfy his thirst for knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, and he kept pressing for more. God heard David's heart cry and responded by filling his cup till it was running over. In this way, David the lyrical psalmist of Israel absorbed a few things about the kingdom narrative and things that had been kept secret since the foundation of the world. These divine secrets are things we urgently need to learn in the modern church.

David's testimony gave credence to the fact that you don't need to study the Bible to know God in detail, because God's invisible qualities, eternal power, and divine nature have been on display since the dawn of creation. The extra that God gave to David was the revelation he had of the New Testament Day while he was still living in the era of the Old Testament. Frankly speaking, this was a spectacular feat for any man who lived and died long before the Cross of Calvary stamped its authority on the pages of human history.

David was also a man of war. He was familiar with the weapons of war that were not carnal yet mightily anointed to pull down strongholds. The way he put the knowledge to use in his days is worthy of study. This is especially pertinent when you get to that place where it looks like darkness has covered everything and everyone in your life.

David understood that the kingdom of darkness was powered by the spiritual Law of Sin and Death. This is why David, in his most trying hour, pleaded with God to empower him with the grace of the New Testament church. Considering that this was a mystery that had been concealed since the foundation of the world, it was an astonishing demand. David knew the difference between the fruits of the Tree of Life and the Tree of Death, and this was an advantage he put to use when the darkness descended and he was almost gone. How on Earth this Old Testament man was able to deploy the kingdom mysteries and access codes that the modern church still struggles to comprehend is indeed a great puzzle.
