Diese reichen von der morgendlichen Kleiderwahl über verschiedene Menüs in der Kantine bis zum abendlichen Fernsehprogramm. Auswahlstress steht an der Tagesordnung. Der durchschnittliche deutsche Supermarkt bot seinen Kunden bereits im Jahr 2003 eine Auswahl aus rund 12.000 Artikeln an - etwa 1,6-mal mehr als noch zehn Jahre zuvor - Tendenz steigend. Trotzdem scheinen die Umsätze mit dem stetig wachsenden Angebot zu sinken. Discounter wie Aldi oder Lidl, die weit weniger umfassende Sortimente anbieten, verzeichnen dagegen Rekordumsätze (Kliger, Messner & Niemeier, 2003). Auch in anderen Lebensbereichen scheint die Optionsvielfalt die Menschen langsam aber sicher zu überfordern. Bücher, in denen das Sprichwort "weniger ist mehr" als Lebensmaxime gepriesen wird, sind aus den Bestsellerlisten nicht mehr wegzudenken. Eigentlich verwunderlich, denn insbesondere in westlichen Kulturen, in denen das Streben nach (Wahl-) Freiheit als Grundbedürfnis angesehen wird, ist die Auffassung weit verbreitet, dass mehr auch automatisch besser sein muss (z.B. Iyengar & Lepper, 1999). Kann es also wirklich sein, dass mit zunehmender Optionsvielfalt die Unzufriedenheit steigt? Oder brauchen wir bei unserem täglichen Einkauf tatsächlich die Auswahl aus 100 Sorten Kaffee und 30 Sorten Toilettenpapier, damit wir glücklich sind? Dieser Fragestellung soll im Verlauf der vorliegenden Seminararbeit auf den Grund gegangen werden. Dazu werden zunächst zwei Entscheidungstypen definiert, die sich hinsichtlich der Zielsetzung ihrer Entscheidung und ihrer Reaktion auf steigende Wahlmöglichkeiten unterscheiden.
