About the Book

This Sargent Bench Plane Identification Guide is a joint effort between authors who have a passion for vintage tools, especially Sargent bench planes. The mission is to help educate Sargent collectors and woodworkers who wish to continue using and collecting these fine vintage hand planes. Whether the reader is a novice or seasoned woodworker or collector, they will be able to determine exactly what plane they have. Sargent started making their own line of hand planes about 1887 and continued until about 1961. They are one of the few manufacturers still in operations today as a hardware company. The authors of this book have decided to use the experience theyve gained finding, collecting and restoring Sargent Bench Planes to pass on the information weve uncovered on this interesting line of vintage tools. This book is loaded with a tremendous amount of documentation and pertinent information that will help you make a true identification of the approximate age of your Sargent Series bench plane.

About the Author

Don Wilwol - Don is a Systems Consultant who has worked for Dell, Microsoft and other professional consulting firms, but started his career life as a carpenter and woodworker. He started building and restoring whatever needed it at a very early age and has built or restored everything from military rifles to condominium projects. His vintage tool obsession started when his wife Colleen insisted on spending some time at antique shops and flea markets. The Sargent collection started with a few finds like a Type 1 Sargent #409 and a #15 Shaw patent. The research and the history is the motivating factor and currently Sargent planes represent about 65% of his collection. Website: http: //timetestedtools.net Horizontal Mike Howell, PhD. - Mike is a retired Public School Administrator and a Disabled Vietnam Veteran. His interests in hand planes dates back to around the early 1960s, when an early Pre-VBM Sargent #418 Jointer and an Auburn 22in Jointer were passed down to him in the family. After several college degrees, jobs, and decades later, the woodworking bug finally struck in retirement and for the past +7years Mike has built his dream woodworking shop and delved into collecting Sargent planes. Understanding that collecting can be overwhelming, Mike has restricted his interests to only Pre-WWII Sargent #400 and #5400 series metal hand planes. Narrowing the collection in such a way, has allowed the author to gather a greater depth of knowledge and appreciation for the Sargent brand in general, and the #400/#5400 series specifically. Website: http: //horizontalheavens.com/sargent.htm Casey Benton - Casey is a self-employed entrepreneur. At age 13 growing up on a farm, his father told him to tear down an old barn making sure to save as much of the old wood and nails as he could and straighten all of the nails. After 3 weeks the job was finished and everything was nicely stacked. He was then told to build a new barn using the old wood and nails. Most of his adult working career was spent in the Oil and Gas service industry with a primary responsibility writing technical training manuals. His interest in woodworking and using vintage tools was kick started from a visit from a friend about 2 years ago and his intense interest in history has given him a short learning curve. His vintage Sargent collection includes a full set of #400s and #700s series Sargent planes and specifically highlights a Zenith Shaws Patent #14 by Sargent and an unusual #711.
