Todos sufrimos síntomas alguna vez. Cuando sentimos dolor, cansancio, picor o ardor de estómago, echamos mano de nuestro conocimiento y del botiquín doméstico. Creemos que puede ser debido a un motivo o a otro. Tomamos el fármaco y, si el síntoma desaparece, no le damos mayor importancia.


Otras veces, los profesionales pondrán un nombre al padecimiento, aunque reconozcan su incapacidad para concretar el origen y la causa de los síntomas, y también la incapacidad para devolver la salud. Un porcentaje elevado de pacientes no tendrá siquiera este consuelo de contar con un nombre para su sufrimiento y recaerá sobre ellos la sospecha del origen imaginario o en el peor de los casos, fingido, del padecimiento.


En realidad, gran parte de los síntomas catalogados como explicados médicamente, con un diagnóstico en apariencia correcto por disponer de una etiqueta aceptada (migraña, fibromialgia, artrosis), no sólo no están explicados desde la perspectiva de la medicina, sino que la explicación propuesta es cuestionable desde la biología, por ser incorrecta o porque se omiten factores fundamentales.


Se trata de un capítulo extenso y vergonzante de la medicina, el de los síntomas sin explicación médica. He reflejado mi intrahistoria profesional desde los primeros años de obediencia estricta a la ortodoxia hasta llegar al marco teórico de las enfermedades autoneuroinmunes, que fui construyendo desde los comienzos de 1990 y que sitúa a la información como un componente fundamental de la vida.

Arturo Goicoechea Uriarte.Neurólogo. Nacido en Mondragón, Guipúzcoa, en 1946. Jefe del Servicio de Neurología en el Hospital Santiago de Vitoria (Álava), España, hasta 2011, en la actualidad jubilado. Permanece activo como enseñante y divulgador de la aplicación de la neurociencia al ámbito de la neurología, especialmente referida a la migraña y al dolor crónico sin daño, impartiendo cursos y charlas y, desde hace una decena larga de años, a través de su blog.
