Il paesaggio non poteva essere più ostile, pochi miseri cespugli cercavano di sopravvivere tra le pietre in un terreno secco e polveroso.
La siccità aveva trasformato il territorio, le fonti d'acqua stavano gradualmente scomparendo e le grandi mandrie di erbivori erano migrate.
L'abbondanza di verdure, frutta e semi era appena un ricordo di un passato non troppo lontano, e i clan umani tornarono a una vita nomade.
Un giorno uno di questi clan, poco più di una mezza dozzina di uomini e qualche donna con i loro bambini, trovò, ai margini del deserto, un uomo che sembrava aspettare pazientemente, seduto su una pietra. Era un giovane uomo, alto e molto magro, che indossava strane coperte bianche, accanto a lui c'era un cervo appena ucciso, e quando due cacciatori si avvicinarono con cautela l'uomo parlò loro nella loro lingua, offrendo di condividere la carne. Era un gesto insolito in questi tempi di scarsità e fame, i cacciatori non sapevano come reagire, potevano semplicemente ucciderlo, o scacciarlo rubando la carne. Notarono che l'individuo non portava una lancia o qualsiasi altra arma, questo li rassicurò e non ci volle molto perché qualcuno accendesse un fuoco mentre i suoi compagni scuoiavano l'animale, il resto del clan si avvicinò timidamente. Questo non era un buon posto per accamparsi, perché non c'era nessuna fonte d'acqua nelle vicinanze. Così, mentre la carne arrostiva sul fuoco, l'uomo si diresse verso un punto a pochi metri di distanza e cominciò a scavare con un bastone, chiedendo loro di aiutarlo. Su insistenza di questo strano individuo, alcuni cacciatori percuotevano la dura superficie con le loro lance, ma la maggior parte si limitava a guardarlo senza capire le ragioni di tale attività sotto l'implacabile sole di mezzogiorno.
Fu allora che avvenne il miracolo. La terra che stavano scavando, secca e dura, divenne più scura, contenendo un po' di umidità. Sorpresi, tutti cominciarono ad aiutare, e in poco tempo un liquido marrone sgorgò, riempiendo il pozzo e rovesciandosi serpeggiante sulla superficie arida e screpolata. Poche ore dopo si era trasformata in una sorgente di acqua cristallina, fresca e abbondante. Quell'uomo sapeva esattamente dove avrebbero dovuto scavare, per i cacciatori era stato un intervento degli dei.
Fu così che tutto ebbe inizio.
Gli anni passavano e il paesaggio cambiava. L'uomo, di cui nessuno conosceva l'origine, si era stabilito nell'oasi e ogni volta che incontrava la gente, dissipava la loro naturale diffidenza offrendo loro cibo e acqua. Parlava perfettamente diversi dialetti indigeni, non era mai aggressivo, curava i malati, curava le fratture e le ferite dei cacciatori usando erbe macerate che portava nei suoi sacchi di pelle. La mortalità infantile, che era molto alta, si è ridotta in pochi anni dopo che il visitatore ha iniziato ad aiutare le donne incinte.
La voce si diffuse rapidamente, e man mano che altri clan si fecero avanti con offerte, la popolazione dell'oasi aumentò.
Cominciarono a chiamarlo Patesi... "L'uomo che aiuta".
