Dayana fingió otra sonrisa para tranquilizar a la pequeña Milena. Las dudas se reflejaron en el rostro pecoso de la niña. Ella sabía que algo andaba mal, pero también entendía que ya era tarde para volver.
-No vas a lastimarnos, ¿verdad?
-Pensé que éramos amigas. -Dayana se esforzó, a pesar de sentir que su sonrisa era cada vez más falsa-. Intentaste robar mi comida, ¿lo recuerdas?
-Lo lamento.
-No tienes que lamentarlo -sonrió- ahora somos amigas, no tendrás que robar nunca más. En la estación te darán toda la comida que quieras.
-¿Y qué hay de los monstruos de sangre azul?
-¿Ves a alguno de esos monstruos por aquí?
-Mi abuelo solía contarme que ellos... -titubeó, antes de desviar la mirada-. En el refugio nos dijeron que ellos fingen ser personas normales.
-¿Piensas que soy uno de ellos? -Dayana se acuclilló a su lado, para después acariciarle la mejilla.
-¿Lo eres?
-Claro que no -mintió- dime, si fuera un monstruo, ¿habría accedido a llevarte a ti y a tus amigos a mi hogar?

Dayana se mantuvo a su lado. La joven Milena no tenía forma de ver la jeringa que su acompañante mantenía en el bolsillo trasero de su traje de protección. La niña pecosa, de cabello esponjoso y rizado, no tenía forma de saber que la estudiaban en ese preciso instante. No tenía forma de comprender que un peligroso depredador analizaba cada gesto en su rostro, preparándose para tomar una decisión definitiva en los próximos segundos. La recolectora acarició con delicadeza el cuello de la niña, y con la mano libre aferró la jeringuilla llena de una sustancia anestésica. Si la niña trataba de correr no tendría más opción que sedarla por la fuerza.

-Discúlpame -dijo la niña- todos esos años en el refugio, escuchando esas horribles historias, me llevaron a volverme un poco desconfiada.
-Ya no tienes que preocuparte de nada -mintió Dayana- hay cosas malas aquí afuera, fue una suerte que nos encontráramos antes de que sucediera algo malo.
-Los monstruos de sangre azul -comentó la niña, mientras se incorporaba- esas cosas que dicen de ellos, ¿son ciertas?
-Hay cosas malas aquí afuera. En un día especialmente malo, hasta la lluvia podría convertirse en un peligroso enemigo -destacó la recolectora-, pero esos monstruos de los que hablas están muy lejos de aquí.
-Pero ¿es cierto que les drenan la sangre a las personas? -insistió Milena-. Y eso que dicen acerca de que lucen como personas normales, ¿también es cierto?
-La gente inventa muchas cosas.

Milena le dedicó una última sonrisa antes de reanudar la marcha. Dayana la observó sin perder ese despiadado instinto de autopreservación. Tardó unos segundos en notar el líquido tibio que se derramaba por su mano.

Se retiró los guantes con mucho cuidado y observó la fea cortada que atravesaba la palma de su mano. Se había cortado con la jeringuilla sin notarlo. La sangre azul y enferma no dejaba de fluir. Se vendó la herida lo más rápido que pudo. La niña no podía verla sangrando. Eso la asustaría, y si tomaba una decisión tonta, como correr, no le quedaría más opción que recurrir a la violencia.
