I wrote the poems in this book for my own therapeutic value. As with all of my poetry, expressing myself through writing releases the tensions that I am feeling. Having Tourette Syndrome, ADHD and OCD cause an abundance of tension in my life. I wrote this book not only to relieve the negative energies within myself but hopefully, to create some positive energy in others who may not be familiar with these disorders as well. This book is also to provide a counterpoint to the stigmas, the stereotypes, and the prejudices, surrounding Tourette Syndrome, OCD, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Whenever Hollywood and television talk shows portray a person with Tourette Syndrome, they always seem to use the same stereotypical symptoms to define the disorder and also to define the person who has it. Essentially creating a caricature. Coprolalia, the sudden urge to say inappropriate things, is the most common portrayal. Even though Coprolalia is a symptom that only 10% of those with Tourette Syndrome have, it makes up nearly 100% of every onscreen portrayal of the disorder. The illness is used by lazy screenwriters and pseudo-intellectuals for the shock value and nothing more. Having lived with classic; full-blown; early onset; Tourette Syndrome, I can honestly say that having the disorder can make life interesting, even comical at times. However, there is a much darker flip-side to the coin. Along with the isolation and the negative spotlight that inherently accompanies Tourette Syndrome, living with the disorder includes a high degree of mental stress and even physical damage to the sufferer. For my entire life, I have been in a state of constant motion both mentally and physically. I live every day with repetitive thoughts about symmetry; geometry; shapes; math; numbers; and letters. Obsessing over these things has given me decades of insomnia and headaches. Living years at a time in a perpetual state of tics and jerking movements has caused me to dislocate my jawbone; hyper-extend both of my elbows; damage cartilage in my fingers; re-position the carpal bones in my wrists; misshapen several of my fingers and toes; and damaged three vertebrae to the point that I had to have spinal surgery on my neck. Tourette Syndrome is an illness that makes many people laugh, but for those who have the disorder, life is not that much fun.I wrote the poems in this book for my own therapeutic value. I published the poems in this book in an effort to shine a positive light on to those who suffer from Tourette Syndrome and other mental disorders.
