Dodge broughton, Wholesale and Retail Dealers in Ice, North Beverly, and 24 Central St; Salem - 1t was formerly believed that all fresh water ice was pure and wholesome, for it was supposed that the process of freezing eliminated all impurities and that consequently even impure water would yield ice that could be used with perfect safety, but we know better now, and in some cities the well-informed residents use only artificial ice as the natural ice there distributed is from ponds or rivers subject to contamination. But it is not so with Wenham Lake ice, - on the contrary that is conceded to be the purest harvested in this part of the State, and as the residents of Beverly drink Wenham Lake water and know from experience that it is healthful and pure, it is therefore natural that they should be perfectly satisfied with Wenham Lake ice. The Salem people also know a good thing when they see it, and hence Messrs. Dodge Broughton, who deal in Wenham Lake ice at wholesale and retail, distribute it in Salem as well as throughout Beverly, and have an office at 24 Central Street, in the famous Old Witch City. Their great ice houses are located on Enon Street in North Beverly and look big enough to hold suflicient ice to last for several seasons; but they are not a bit too big, although they can hold tons, for the demand is such as to empty them every year. The firm employ about thirty men during the summer and utilize twelve teams, the delivery service being not only extensive but also prompt and reliable. This business was founded about 1870 by Mr. B. N. Dodge, and the present firm was formed in 1887, when Mr. Thomas Broughton was admitted to partnership. It is certainly a thoroughly representative Beverly business house, both on account of the magnitude and, the character of its Operations, and both members of the firm are very generally known hereabouts, especially Mr. Dodge, who has held sevaral responsible town Offices.
