About the Book

A narrative poem, retelling the legend. Hailed since Medieval times as a religious martyr and thus, celebrated for his heroism, Saint George has become, for many who seek strength against adverse odds, their powerful patron. Indeed, Saint George exemplifies the prototypical knight in shining armour. However, is the legend is true? And what is its definitive account? Well, in bygone days, Saint George was a Christian martyr of the early Church. And, while his story has captured imaginations, Saint George's legacy involves much more. As a man, Saint George is believed to have been born in Cappadocia, in modern-day Turkey, sometime in the late third century. While not much is known of his early life, Saint George's legendary status begins after he became a soldier in the Rome's Army under Emperor Diocletian. The military suited Saint George, as he soon became Rome's leading general. However, all would change unexpectedly when Diocletian began a religious cleanse that saw Roman society force the expulsion of and execute, early Christians. Depending on the story told, in vain, Diocletian tempted Saint George to sacrifice to Roman gods and thus, convert to paganism with the promise of wealth, power and fame. However, Saint George withstood the lure of possessions, performance as well as popularity, choosing instead to remain loyal to his faith, which led to his execution. Some versions even note that his beheading only came after years of undergoing horrible torture designed to break his will. Yet, in all versions, Saint George's determination resulted in the Christian conversion of others. Following his decapitation in AD 303, Saint George was venerated as a saint across Christianity, but it would be 900 years before any dragons appeared. The devastating crusades of the 11th and 13th centuries brought a resurgence of interest in Saint George's martyrdom. In dying for his belief in Christ, and because of his military prowess, Saint George was revered by crusaders as an appealing figure for them to invoke for protection and guidance. Thus, the red cross that crusaders wore is known as Saint George's cross. Around the 11th century, this revival of Saint George resulted in the legend he is famously associated with. According to tradition, the City of Silene - allegedly in modern-day Libya - was to sacrifice to the monstrous appetite of a dragon holding the city hostage, their fairest maiden. When this maiden was vulnerably in the dragon's keep, as luck would have it, Saint George was passing through the region. Having come across the beast's den then, Saint George saved the distressed damsel by slaying the dragon. His bravery thus inspired the people of Silene to convert to Christianity. No doubt, a great story, but perhaps more fantasy than reality. After all, no dragon fossils have been found to confirm their existence, so something seems to be missing to tie it together. However, the allegory read between the lines is a true tale found of a noble Christian soldier coming to the rescue of the innocent and fits perfectly with the notions of Christ's teachings, the greatest of which is Love. This Love that God had shown the world was epitomized in sending His only son to die for humanity's sins. Therefore, the ideas encapsulated in the legend of "Saint George and the Dragon" have, somewhat, also become the driving ethos behind Christianity's dogma. Therefore, on the feast of Saint George, communities around the globe celebrate the saint's feat, however fanciful one finds it. In "Saint George and the Dragon: The Definitive Account" the author presents a narrative to display Saint George's legacy which has endured for over a millennia. It is in Saint George's example, the author portrays, that we all should take the legend as factual for our conceptions of what is real courage when we face ours "dragons." And thus, it is a definitive source of strength to aspire to emulate as modern Christians in an increasingly contentiou
