About the Book

A Sailor's luck helped an Illegal Mexican family to live in California. This is a fictional story that begins in 1962. Jack is a sailor working at a Naval Supply Depot in San Diego. He is about to be discharged when a gang working at the depot stole a truckload of military rifles and sold them to Castro's agents in Florida. The gang planned to frame Jack for all their thievery. His depot boss Harris, who is a member of the gang, selected Jack because he was honest, naïve and dumb. The gang thought they designed the perfect plan to have Jack blamed for all the thefts. Somehow all their plans misfired. During the time the gang is after Jack, he meets a young waitress whose name is Ana. She and her family are living in California illegally. Jack and Ana developed a close relationship that grew into marriage. As the gang's luck ran out, they experienced problems beyond their imagination. A few gang members became destitute and others served time in jail. Jacks' questionable luck surrounded him with a large Mexican family and their friends to live and work with the rest of his life. Fred's motel and diner is a fictional story about people who visited and lived at this motel. There are many unexpected twists of fate that knitted a few of these people together to find a better life. The year is 1966. Fred's Motel is in a town called Rehoboth, just off route 66, about 5 miles east of Gallup, New Mexico. It belongs to Fred an old retired Detroit policeman. He has no family or close friends except for a few old Detroit police buddies. He retired fifteen years ago looking for a warmer climate. After a short time in New Mexico, he wins a motel during a card game. He ran this motel by himself for many years, but as an older man, he needed help. This is when he hires Jack, a young man who had a car accident. After his accident, a young woman picked him up and gave him a ride on her motorcycle to Fred's Motel. The young man develops a good relationship with Fred and the two become close, almost like a father a son relationship. Fred and Jack have many discussions and Jack enjoyed several of Fred old expressions when things went wrong at the motel. The best ones were, "Life is a bitch then you grow old and die and another one was life is like a spider web, the longer you stay in an unhappy situation the more entangled you become and the harder it is to make a change." On the positive side, this motel becomes a magical place where many people with unhappy lives somehow experience a second chance for a better life.
