Sagunto y Numancia son los primeros grandes paradigmas de la legendaria obstinación española en la defensa de la libertad. Ciudad ibera y costera la primera y celtíbera e interior la segunda, las dos tiene en común su solar y su ascendiente hispano. Y a ambas les une el tener como enemigos involuntarios a dos imperios mediterráneos: Roma y Cartago. Cartago, vencida por Roma en la I Guerra Púnica, esperaba el momento de su revancha. Cuando las circunstancias se mostraron favorables, Aníbal buscó un objetivo capaz de romper el frágil equilibrio existente entre ambas naciones y puso cerco a la ciudad de Sagunto. Ésta es atacada por Aníbal, pero Roma no acude en su ayuda hasta que, ante el hecho consumado, exige explicaciones. Al no ser satisfechas, ello provocó la ruptura de hostilidades, dando lugar a la II Guerra Púnica. Expulsada ya Cartago de nuestra península, los romanos convirtieron su presencia en permanente. En este contexto se produce el drama de Numancia, una ciudad celtíbera, próxima a Soria, que durante diecisiete años estuvo en conflicto con la mayor potencia del momento. Para derrotarla, fue necesario que entrara en liza Escipión Emiliano, el nieto del vencedor de Aníbal en Zama, y él mismo destructor de Cartago. La abrumadora superioridad numérica, y las durísimas condiciones de asedio, la obligan a claudicar tras una resistencia de nueve meses. Sagunto y Numancia marcaron un hito que se repitió con la misma gloria; así, Astapa (Estepa), Calagurris (Calahorra), Aledo, Tarifa, Zaragoza, Gerona, Baler, Toledo o Madrid, han conformado esa cadena de poblaciones o fortalezas mártires que se sacrificaron, en ocasiones hasta su propia existencia, en aras de su independencia, su honor, su misión o su patriotismo, configurando así las cualidades que darán forma al carácter nacional.
About the Author: Agustín Alcázar Segura es General de Brigada de Infantería del Ejército de Tierra español. Diplomado de Estado Mayor, actualmente en situación de Retirado. De su larga vida profesional cabe destacar su destino en la Escuela de Estado Mayor del Ejército de Tierra, primero como profesor de Táctica de segundo curso y más tarde como Jefe del Grupo de Estrategia, también de segundo curso. Así mismo fue Jefe de la Sección de Doctrina de la División de Operaciones del Estado Mayor del Ejército. Y más tarde, ya como General de Brigada, Subdirector de Doctrina del Mando de Adiestramiento y Doctrina (MADOC). Entre sus destinos operativos cabe detacar el mando del III Batallón de Carros del Regimiento de Infantería Acorazada Alcázar de Toledo n° 61, el mando del Regimiento de Infantería Mecanizada Asturias n° 31 así com la Segunda Jefatura de la Comandancia General de Ceuta. Autor de más de 300 artículos profesionales, tiene publicados los siguientes libros: La Anexión y Guerra de Santo Domingo, Akrón 2010; Las Guerras de Independencia Hispanoamericana, CISDE 2011 e Historia Militar de Gibraltar, Akrón 2013. Más recientemente ha publicado en Amazon La Sublevación de Cataluña 1640-1652, España sin Rumbo (El Sexenio Revolucionario 1868-1874), Historia del Terrorismo Español e Historia Militar de la Reconquista.
