About the Author: LA VITA Niccolò Foscolo (Ugo è il suo pseudonimo) nasce nel 1778 a Zante e compie i primi studi nel seminario di Spalato. Nel 1792 si trasferisce a Venezia dove, nonostante la povertà della famiglia, completa l'istruzione comprendendo, oltre ai classici, anche i filosofi settecenteschi. Per le sue idee rivoluzionarie giacobine è costretto a fuggire nel 1796 sui colli Euganei, dove traccia il primo nucleo dell'Ortis. Ottiene i primi successi come letterato con la tragedia "Tieste". Nel 1797 in seguito al trattato di Campoformio (Napoleone cede Venezia all'Austria) Foscolo ripara a Milano, capitale della repubblica Cisalpina francese. Qui conosce il Monti e il Parini e dirige per un breve periodo il "Monitore italiano". Combatte valorosamente sotto Napoleone quando la penisola viene attaccata dalle truppe austro-russe; ottiene in seguito numerosi incarichi diplomatici che lo porteranno a viaggiare in tutta Italia. E' questo un periodo di ricca vita sentimentale e artistica in cui pubblica l'Ortis (1802), le Odi e i Sonetti (1803). Dal 1804 al 1806 vive nella Francia del Nord in attesa dell'ordine di Napoleone per invadere l'Inghilterra. Qui traduce il "Viaggio Sentimentale di Yorik" dello Sterne, elabora la figura di Didimo Chierico e conosce Sofia Emerytt, da cui avrà un figlia, Floriana. Tornato in Italia nel 1806 compone i "Sepolcri". Nell'1808 gli viene offerta la cattedra di eloquenza dell'Università di Pavia (orazione inaugurale: "Dell'origine e dell'uffizio della lettaratura") ma la cattedra viene presto soppressa. Nel 1811, in seguito al clamoroso insuccesso dell' "Aiace", lascia Milano per Firenze, dove trascorre tra il '12 e il '13 un periodo serenissimo nella villa di Bellosguardo, dove compone la maggior parte delle Grazie, e scrive la "Ricciarda", la terza delle sue tragedie. Dopo la sconfitta di Napoleone torna a Milano, ora sotto gli Austriaci, i quali gli fecero proposte generose affinché collaborasse col nuovo governo ed aiutasse a catturare le simpatie dei lombardi. Ma dopo un'iniziale esitazione decide di abbandonare per sempre l'Italia e di auto-esiliarsi prima a Zurigo e poi a Londra. Trascorre gli ultimi anni tra passioni infelici, continue difficoltà economiche, ma compone importanti saggi critici sulla poesia italiana. Muore nel 1827 all'età di 49 anni, e nel 1871 la sua tomba sarà trasferita a Santa Croce.
