Das brutale Spektakel der Folter, das Michel Foucault als "Fest der Martern" beschrieb, ist seit jeher eines der kontroversesten Sujets der Filmgeschichte, sei es als visuelle Erkundung des Körperinneren im Splatterfilm oder als Diskursivierung sadistischer und faschistischer Herrschaftsstrukturen in Pasolinis Salò. Einiges spricht jedoch dafür, dass sich ab etwa 2004 eine neue grausame Qualität der Folterinszenierung im amerikanischen Mainstreamkino etabliert hat, die häufig mit dem popkulturellen Label torture porn versehen wird. Im Kontext einer Wiederkehr der Folter - man denke nur an die ebenfalls 2004 veröffentlichten Fotos aus dem US-Militärgefängnis Abu Ghraib - scheint eine filmische Thematisierung gezielter körperlicher und seelischer Gewalt zunächst wenig verwunderlich. Umso frappierender ist jedoch der filmische Umgang des torture porn mit der ästhetisch kalkulierten Inszenierung der Folter, deren sich Filme wie Saw, Hostel oder The Passion of the Christ gleichermaßen ausschweifend wie obsessiv bedienen. Dem kulturellen Exzess der Folter scheint ein filmischer Exzess ästhetischer Mittel beiseite gestellt zu werden, der das grausame Fest überschreitender Gewaltsamkeit in einen transgressionswilligen Genuss überführt. Doch wenn der torture porn tatsächlich, wie vielfach von der Filmkritik nahegelegt wird, eine Schaulust am Leid anderer zu kultivieren versucht, in welchem Verhältnis stehen dann die Ästhetik der Filme und der dem kulturellen Exzess inhärente Sadismus im zeitgenössischen Kino?Vor dem philosophischen Hintergrund von Georges Batailles Schriften zur inneren Erfahrung der Überschreitung unterzieht Florian Plumeyer die Filme Saw (2004) und The Passion of the Christ (2004) als prominente Vertreter des neuen Folterfilms einer detaillierten Untersuchung, um den Zusammenhang zwischen der kulturellen Grenzüberschreitung der Folter und dem kinematografischen Exzess auf den Grund zu gehen. Der analytische Fokus liegt dabei einerseits auf dem kulturellen Exzess der Folter, die mit Jan Philipp Reemtsma als verschwenderische, autotelische Gewalt begriffen werden kann, andererseits auf dem medienspezifischen Moment der Verausgabung, das Kristin Thompson als kinematografischen Exzess beschrieben hat.
