This Volume Contains The Writings Of Kwang Tse Xvii-Xxxiii, The Thai-Shang Tractate Of Actions And Their Retributions, Other Taoist Texts And Index To Vols. 39 And 40. The Two Volumes Now Submitted To The Reader Are A Fulfilment Of The Promise Made So Long Ago. They Contain Versions Of The Three Works Which Were Specified And In Addition As Appendixes, Four Other Shorter Treatises Of Taoism; Analyses Of Several Of The Books Of Kwang-Tze By Lin His-Kung; A List Of The Stories Which Form So Important A Part Of Those Books; Two Essays By Two Of The Greatest Scholars Of China, Written The One In A. D. 586 And Illustrating The Taoistic Beliefs Of That Age And The Other In A. D. 1078 And Dealing With The Four Books Of Kwang-Tze Whose Genuineness Is Frequently Called In Question. About The Authorfriedrich Max Müller (1823 -1900) Was A German-Born Philologist And Orientalist, Who Lived And Studied In Britain For Most Of His Life. He Was One Of The Founders Of The Western Academic Disciplines Of Indian Studies And Religious Studies ('Science Of Religion', German Religionswissenschaft). Müller Wrote Both Scholarly And Popular Works On The Subject Of Indology. The Sacred Books Of The East, A 50-Volume Set Of English Translations, Was Prepared Under His Direction. James Legge (1815 -1897) Was A Scottish Linguist, Missionary, Sinologist, And Translator Who Was Best Known As An Early Translator Of Classical Chinese Texts Into English. Legge Served As A Representative Of The London Missionary Society In Malacca And Hong Kong (1840-1873) And Was The First Professor Of Chinese At Oxford University (1876-1897). In Association With Max Muller He Prepared The Monumental Sacred Books Of The East Series, Published In 50 Volumes Between 1879 And 1891. Legge Went, In 1839, As A Missionary To China, But First Stayed At Malacca Three Years, In Charge Of The Anglo-Chinese College There. The College Was Subsequently Moved To Hong Kong, Where Legge Lived For Nearly Thirty Ye
