Este es un libro de humor político; de chistes, no de cuentos. Se dice que un día Fidel Castro citó en su oficina al famoso Pepito [Jaimito en otros países] y le increpó porque tenía la isla inundada de cuentos en su contra. El travieso niño fue rápido en su reacción: Con todo respeto, comandante, aquí hay un problema de semántica: yo soy el de los chistes; ¡el de los cuentos es usted! El ejercicio del poder absoluto es solemne. Los dictadores como Fidel Castro no ríen; por eso son enemigos furibundos de las risas de los demás cuando los ridiculizan. El objetivo de este libro no es solamente hacer reír al lector con los chistes. Es un esfuerzo más en tratar de documentar, para conservar para el futuro, las reacciones populares ante situaciones contra las cuales el pueblo cubano no ha tenido otro recurso. Lamentable es el haber tenido que incluir --¡cómo podemos soslayarlo!-las que revelan la división de la familia y la sociedad cubanas. El libro está dividido en cinco décadas y estas en diez años, con al menos un chiste bajo cada año. Es decir, este es un breve compendio de la reacción humorística del pueblo cubano al totalitarismo ejercido por Fidel y Raúl Castro durante más de medio siglo. Dos hechos hicieron que me decidiera a actualizarlo y publicarlo después de mucho tiempo de tenerlo engavetado. El primero se refiere a lo escrito por Ben Lewis, periodista londinense quien, en 2009, publicó un libro titulado Hammer[and] tickle, donde afirma que los cubanos han contado muchos chistes sobre Castro, pero estos no eran chistes comunistas como los europeos, ya que fueron adaptados a cubanos, y los nuevos fueron inventados tanto por los exiliados cubanos y norteamericanos de derecha como por los cubanos. El segundo hecho se refiere a unas declaraciones hechas a la prensa por el antiguo miembro del Buró Político del Partido Comunista de Cuba y ex ministro de cultura Abel Prieto el 19 de septiembre de 2012: En los cubanos no hay un solo chiste que aluda a la Revolución, ni a delaciones ni a presos de conciencia ni a personajes escindidos. Agregó que los chistes cubanos apuntan a las carencias o a la emigración, pero de forma benevolente, perdonadora, sin rencor ni hiel. Dejamos en manos del lector el dictamen de si los mismos reflejan o no una contradicción radical con las expresiones de los dos autores que han tenido la osadía de negar la originalidad y el alcance de los chistes políticos bajo uno de los regímenes totalitarios más longevos de la historia moderna. Esta edición incluye una breve referencia a la muerte de Fidel Castro.
