Par réincarnation, on entend l'incarnation répétée, ou l'incarnation dans la chair, de l'âme ou de la partie immatérielle de la nature humaine. Le terme métempsychose est souvent utilisé dans le même sens, la définition de ce dernier terme est: Le passage de l'âme, comme essence immortelle, à la mort du corps, dans un autre corps vivant. On utilise parfois le terme transmigration des âmes, terme utilisé dans le sens de passage d'un corps à un autre. Mais le terme transmigration est souvent utilisé en relation avec la croyance de certaines races sous-développées qui soutenaient que l'âme des hommes passait parfois dans le corps des animaux inférieurs, comme punition pour leurs péchés commis au cours de la vie humaine. Mais cette croyance est discréditée par les adeptes de la réincarnation ou de la métempsychose, et elle n'a aucun lien avec leur philosophie ou leurs croyances, car les idées proviennent d'une source complètement différente et n'ont rien en commun. Il existe de nombreuses formes de croyance - de nombreux degrés de doctrine - concernant la réincarnation, comme nous le verrons au fur et à mesure, mais il y a un principe fondamental sous-jacent à toutes les nuances d'opinion et divisions des écoles. Cette croyance fondamentale peut être exprimée comme la doctrine selon laquelle il existe dans l'homme quelque chose d'immatériel (appelé âme, esprit, moi intérieur ou bien d'autres noms) qui ne périt pas à la mort ou à la désintégration du corps, mais qui persiste en tant qu'entité, et après un intervalle de repos plus ou moins court, il se réincarne. Par rapport à cela, la conception du Karma refuse d'utiliser les termes récompense et punition, ou même de nourrir ces idées, mais voit au contraire en tout l'élaboration d'un grand Plan Cosmique par lequel tout s'élève de bas en haut, et encore au-dessus. Le karma n'est qu'une phase de la grande loi opérant dans tous les plans et formes de vie et de l'univers. Pour cela, l'idée que "l'Univers est régi par la Loi" est un axiome. Et puisque la Justice y est également implicite, elle ne voit pas les sanctions et les récompenses - les mérites et les inconvénients - mais seulement la preuve de cette Justice Ultime; il le cherche et le trouve dans la conception et la réalisation que tout fonctionne pour le bien. Tout tend vers le haut - que tout est justifié et juste, parce que la fin est le Bien Absolu, et que chaque oeuvre minuscule de la grande machine cosmique tourne dans la bonne direction et vers cette fin. Par conséquent, chacun de nous est exactement là où nous devrions être en ce moment - et notre condition est exactement la meilleure pour nous conduire à cette plénitude et à ce but divins. Et pour de tels penseurs, en fait, il n'y a de diable que la peur et l'infidélité, et tous les autres démons sont des illusions, qu'ils soient appelés Béelzébul, esprit mortel ou karma, s'ils produisent la peur et l'infidélité dans le bien. Et de tels penseurs croient que la manière de vivre selon la Lumière Supérieure, et sans craindre le Karma Maléfique, est de ressentir sa relation avec le Bien Universel, puis de "Vivre un jour à la fois, en faisant de son mieux.
