About the Book

2016 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION BOOK AWARD WINNER. Brotherhood, friendship, loss and love transcend the violence of combat. Poetry gives us both ends of the human condition: the softest of words for the hardest of truths. This book follows in the literary tradition of Wilfred Owen, Rudyard Kipling, Michael Herr and Tim O'Brien. Rubicon delves into the passions of fighting men, and asks us to understand one another by looking inside ourselves. Stanton S. Coerr has been published around the world on topics of combat, national security, international relations and insurgency, and is a graduate of both Duke and Harvard. He is a Marine combat veteran of the war in Iraq, and is the father of three boys. Rubicon, the 2016 Marine Corps Heritage Foundation Gannon Award winner, is his first published work of poetry.
About the Author: Stanton Sears Coerr was born in Virginia and raised in North Carolina. He holds a BA from Duke University; a master's degree from Harvard Kennedy School; and a master's degree from the United States Naval War College. He has been accepted to begin a PhD in modern history at Oxford. Stan spent twenty-five years in the United States Marines, serving in both the active and reserve forces. He was trained as a naval aviator and flew the SuperCobra attack helicopter, but spent most of his career with ground units. He went over the border into Iraq on the first day of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in March 2003, in command of five Marine ANGLICO liasion teams attached to the British Army. He later commanded 4th ANGLICO, and he rose to the rank of Colonel before his retirement. Stan's thesis on insurgency in Africa, Don't Trust the Big Man, won several awards. His memoir of his own wartime experience, Rough Men Stand Ready, is scheduled for publication in the summer of 2017. Rubicon is his first work of poetry. His second book of poetry, Undertow, releases in 2016. Stan is the father of three boys: Jackson, Collin, and Tanner. He lives in Washington D.C.
