Con magistrale abilità narrativa, Francisco Angulo mostra in quest'opera la sua maturità creativa. La sua elettrizzante prosa affronta temi universali - amore, coraggio, ricerca della libertà - mentre seziona con perizia le interiorità di indimenticabili personaggi.

La complessa psicologia della protagonista è uno dei grandi pregi del romanzo. Valentina è destinata a diventare una delle eroine più memorabili della recente letteratura in lingua spagnola.

Un altro grande merito è la capacità dell'autore di ricreare un'epoca storica turbolenta con stupefacente realismo e attenzione ai dettagli. La guerra civile prende vita in queste pagine, catturando il lettore dalla prima all'ultima pagina.
