Die Darstellung von Gladiatoren und ihren Kampfen gehort zu den zentralen Themen der kaiserzeitlichen Bilderwelt. Durch die Untersuchung von Ikonographie und Erzahlweise geht die vorliegende Studie erstmals umfassend der Entstehung und Entwicklung der Gladiatorenbilder sowie ihren Funktionen und Botschaften in spater Republik und Kaiserzeit nach. Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht dabei die sozialhistorische und kunstgeschichtliche Einordnung von Relieffriesen, die einst die Grabbauten munizipaler Wurdentrager in Italien schmuckten. Als konkrete Erinnerungsbilder verwiesen sie auf die Rolle der Grabinhaber als Veranstalter von munera gladiatoria. Die teilweise monumentale Wiedergabe von Gladiatorenspielen auf den Grabern der editores muneris setzte ganz vereinzelt im spaten 2. Jh. und der 1. Halfte des 1. Jhs. v. Chr. in Mittelitalien ein und hatte ihren Hohepunkt in augusteischer Zeit. Bereits fur die nachaugusteische Zeit zeichnet sich jedoch ein starker Ruckgang der Gladiatorenreliefs ab. Die Bilder sind vor allem in den Regionen Mittel- und Suditaliens zu finden, in denen die Stiftung von Gladiatorenkampfen durch stadtische Magistrate noch ein Novum und damit eine aussergewohnliche Leistung war. Der Vergleich mit anderen liberalitas-Darstellungen erweist daruber hinaus die herausragende Bedeutung der Gladiatorenreliefs und der dahinter stehenden Veranstaltungen in diesem Zeitraum. Wohl gemeinsam mit nicht erhaltenen Tafelbildern, die bereits fur das 2. Jh. v. Chr. literarisch belegt sind, stellen die Grabreliefs das erste bildliche Medium uberhaupt dar, das in grossem Umfang Gladiatorenkampfe zeigt. In diesem Zusammenhang entwickelte sich eine eigene, nahezu ex novo entstandene Bildsprache, die vorbildhaft fur die gesamte Kaiserzeit werden sollte und die in dieser Studie erstmals detailliert nachvollzogen wird. Die treibende Kraft hinter den sich rasch wandelnden Bildkonzepten sind dabei die Grabinhaber in ihrer Rolle als Spielgeber. Der Blick auf weitere Denkmalergattungen wie Reliefkeramik, Bildlampen, Graffiti, aber auch auf Wandmalerei und Mosaik vermag es ferner, gewandelte Darstellungsinteressen in unterschiedlichen Kontexten, Zeiten und Regionen aufzuzeigen. Neben der Analyse unterschiedlicher Erzahlstrategien gilt das Augenmerk daruber hinaus Fragen wie dem Verhaltnis von Bild und Realitat, der Rolle von Gewalt oder dem Verhaltnis von Gladiatur und Eros in den Bildern. Neues Licht auf das Gladiatorenwesen und ihre Ikonographie wirft dabei besonders die Untersuchung der einzelnen armaturae und ihrer Bewaffnung, die in ihrer Bedeutung zwischen Barbarenklischee, existierendem Feindbild, mythischem Heros sowie Kampfstil und besonderen Kampftechniken changieren.
