Vertrauen soll in dieser Arbeit weniger als wertvolles ethisch-moralisches Gut in der zwischenmenschlichen Interaktion Betrachtung finden, sondern aus der Perspektive effizienten, wirtschaftlichen Handelns, optimaler Zusammenarbeit und Kooperation in Unter-nehmen - insbesondere zwischen Vorgesetzten und Mitarbeitern - gesehen werden. Zudem gilt Vertrauen als wichtiger schwer imitierbarer Wettbewerbsvorteil von Unternehmen (Osterloh, 2006). Insbesondere die konstitutiven Merkmale von Dienstleistungen Intangibilität und die Integration des externen Faktors (Bruhn, 1999, S. 35) verdeutlichen die hohe Bedeutung von Vertrauen. Die Unsicherheit in der höheren Interaktion zwischen Kunde und Mitarbeiter des Unternehmens und die erschwerte objektive Beurteilung der Leistung durch den Kunden machen Vertrauen erforderlich. Ein (vertrauenswürdiges) Verhalten der Mitarbeiter wird aber auch stark vom praktizierten (vertrauensvollen) Führungsstil geprägt. Wie sich weiterhin zeigen lässt, wirkt sich Vertrauen innerhalb der Organisation auch auf die Effizienz und Effektivität der Mitarbeiter aus. Zudem schützt Vertrauen in schlechten Zeiten (z.Bsp. Reorganisation, Veränderungsprozesse) die Organisation, weil Mitarbeiter stärker motiviert sind, die (neuen) Ziele zu erreichen (Graeff, 1998, zitiert in Schweer, 2003, S. 82). Also alles gute Gründe für den Aufbau und Erhalt von Vertrauen in Unternehmen. Nach einer Begriffsbestimmung von Vertrauen im zweiten Kapitel, werden im dritten Kapitel die Determinanten der Vertrauensbildung aufgezeigt.
