Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Kunst - Fotografie und Film, Note: 1,7, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Warum fotografiert man Menschen dabei, wie sie gefoltert werden und welche Rolle spielt die Fotografie in Bezug auf den Folterskandal in Abu Ghraib? Anhand von Texten von Nick Flynn und Susan Sontag beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit diesen und weiteren Fragen. "Wenn man mich fragt, sage ich manchmal, dass ich über Folter schreibe, doch ich habe festgestellt, wenn ich das Wort "Folter" ausspreche, bekommen viele einen ganz glasigen Blick und verstummen, als hätte ich einen Stein in einen abgrundtiefen Brunnen geworfen." So Nick Flynn, der Autor des Buches "The Ticking is the Bomb", in dem er sich intensiv mit dem Folterskandal in dem Gefängnis der irakischen Stadt Abu Ghraib auseinandersetzt. Als im April 2004 die ersten Fotografien von Gefolterten publik gemacht wurden, haben diese vermutlich viele Menschen betroffen gemacht. Die im Fernsehen gezeigten und in Zeitungen abgedruckten Fotografien von irakischen Gefangenen, die von U.S. Soldaten gefoltert, gedemütigt und sexuell missbraucht wurden, vermittelten unvorstellbare Bilder des Schreckens. Die Fotos umliefen die ganze Welt, brannten sich in die Köpfe der Menschen, verstörten und schärften ihren Blick und ihr Bewusstsein dafür, dass es derart schreckliche Dinge auf der Welt tatsächlich gibt und sie tagtäglich passieren, ohne dass es die Öffentlichkeit direkt mitbekommt. Flynn stellt in seinem Werk "The Ticking is the Bomb" die entscheidende Frage: Warum foltern Menschen andere Menschen? Er setzt sich intensiv mit dem Folterbegriff auseinander und verknüpft diesen mit seiner persönlichen Geschichte. Doch inwiefern gelingt ihm dies und wie arbeitet er in seiner Erzählung mit den Folterbildern? Auch die Schriftstellerin Susan Sontag hat sich bereits in ihrem Essay "Das Leiden anderer betrachten" mit diversen Schreckensbildern auseinanderges
