Il ne s'agit même pas de notre culture, mais tout simplement de notre identité. Par malheur, le domaine de la légende n'existe plus ailleurs que dans les plus obscurantistes des religions. L'idée même d'un siècle qui se prétendait plus grand que les autres est passée de mode au profit de l'éclectisme, autant dire d'une stérilisation universelle des idées. Il est donc important, pour notre psyché nationale, de restaurer le sens du mystère qui présida à la naissance de notre état et d'en retravailler les contours. Comment se fait-il que notre pays, ayant choisi la voie démocratique, comme l'avaient fait les Etats-Unis d'Amérique en se libérant du joug de l'Angleterre, ait inventé un système aussi différent de tout ce qui se pratique ailleurs ? Comment expliquer que les fonctions régaliennes du chef de l'Etat, chez nous, aient la vie si dure ? Pourquoi la Présidence de notre République estelle entourée de privilèges aussi étonnants et d'un cérémonial devenu presque ridicule par son excès de prétention ? D'où vient ce clientélisme récurrent dont nous ne savons plus nous défaire, même en renouvelant les constitutions et en proclamant sans cesse de nouvelles Républiques ? Dans l'ornementation des lambris, dans les corniches et les dorures qui servent tojours de décor à nos gouvernements, ne retrouve-ton pas, plutôt que les principes fondateurs de l'esprit nouveau, l'esthétique d'un régime qui n'avait rien de républicain ? Et si nos dirigeants s'emballent dans la superbe des anciens rois, n'est-ce pas le signe d'un conservatisme profond, qui nous révèle que rien ne peut changer véritablement dans ce qu'on appelle pour de très bonnes raisons l'exception française ? Rivarol observait avec finesse que la France n'est pas une République, mais une monarchie sans tête. Il voyait déjà que l'évolution de l'esprit de notre nation ne peut dépasser certaines limites pour qu'elle demeure française. L'aventure du bonapartisme en est une bonne preuve: il fallait inventer l'Empire pour prolonger la Révolution. Et pourquoi mettons-nous tant de difficulté à abandonner la prétention d'un peuple qui, par tradition, s'est toujour placé au centre du monde ? Pourquoi cesserions-nous de donner des leçons à l'Univers simplement parce qu' il ne nous écoute plus ? Ce qui nous donne tant d'assurance, c'est que, républicains ou pas, nous sommes figés dans le Grand Siècle. C'est lui qui nous a rendus français et c'est seulement à travers sa légende, que nous pouvons retrouver le chemin de notre histoire pour la continuer et la corriger, la reprendre et l'améliorer sans cesser d'être ce que nous sommes.
