Italian description: E' un evento importante, e un'operazione culturale di grande rilevanza, la pubblicazione delle memorie del grande archeologo, collezionista e mercante d'arte Ludwig Pollak (1868-1943). Nato nel ghetto di Praga, dopo aver conseguito la laurea a Vienna scelse di vivere a Roma, dove per mezzo secolo esatto (dal 1893 al 1943) fu grande protagonista e animatore della vita culturale della citta. Molte opere dell'antichita ora note a tutti si possono dire figlie di Ludwig Pollak: egli sapeva infatti, con intuito infallibile, riconoscere il vero dal falso, come per la Fanciulla d'Anzio, ora al Museo delle Terme, che per anni ha riposato dimenticata - perche creduta un falso - nei magazzini della collezione Caetani. O come per il Secondo Trono Ludovisi o Trono di Boston, oggetto di dibattiti non ancora sopiti, nel quale Pollak ha riconosciuto un indubbio originale. Ma, soprattutto, egli era maestro nell'individuare, da un piccolo frammento, l'opera nel suo insieme, e a lui i Musei Vaticani debbono il ritrovamento del famoso braccio della statua del Laocoonte, non a torto denominato Braccio di Pollak. Cio gli valse nel 1905 la croce di commendatore da parte di Pio X, che lo fece passare alla storia come il primo israelita che ricevette una onoreficenza dal Pontefice. Grazie alla fatica piu che decennale di Margarete Merkel Guldan, le Memorie di Pollak vedono ora finalmente la luce dopo tanti anni di riposo negli archivi del Museo Barracco. Da molto tempo si attendeva infatti la pubblicazione di questi scritti che, redatti in forma narrativa con una grafia pressoche indecifrabile negli anni tra il 1940 e il 1943 (Pollak mori tragicamente nella deportazione dell'ottobre di quell'anno), sono una fonte preziosissima di informazioni per l'archeologo innanzitutto, ma anche per lo storico e per lo storico dell'arte. Per la ricchezza della documentazione presentata e per la precisione con cui vengono riportati anche i particolari piu minuti, le Memorie costituiscono infatti una fonte storica di primaria importanza sulla vita culturale romana dei primi cinquant'anni del nostro secolo: raccontano della vita nei salotti e nei circoli intellettuali, dipingono inediti e curiosi ritratti di collezionisti, mercanti d'arte e studiosi, descrivono opere d'arte, monumenti, palazzi. Un'altra grande sorpresa che il volume riserva al lettore e il corredo iconografico. Sono ritratti di personaggi e fotografie in bianco e nero, per lo piu inedite, degli ambienti intorno a Pollak. Ma vi sono anche riproduzioni sin'ora inedite di bellissimi guaches realizzati tra il 1905 e il 1910 che ritraggono con minuziosa fedelta fotografica il palazzo Stroganoff - l'attuale sede della Biblioteca Hertziana - con la fantastica collezione di opere d'arte di Graf Gregor Stroganoff. Pollak ne parla nelle sue Memorie, ma gli originali sono sempre rimasti un mistero, fino al loro attuale rinvenimento da parte di Margarete Guldan.
About the Author: The archaeologist Ludwig Pollak (1868-1943), a native of Prague who lived mostly in Rome, was both connoisseur collector and art merchant. His memoirs, here published for the first time, constitute a most important historical source for Roman cultural life of the first fifty years of our century.
