En esta novela, a través del permiso del humor, y de la libertad que otorga el avanzar sobre ese límite tan finito que existe entre la seriedad de la vida y la parodia, la tragedia y la comedia, Walter C. Medina nos presenta a un periodista, amante de la música (que ya debería haber sentado cabeza hace rato) entusiasmado con el regreso a los escenarios de una de las bandas más icónicas del país: Los Perros Calientes. En medio de esa movida, el periodista descubre con asombro que algo, o alguien, ha convertido al mánager y alma mater de la banda, aquella mente maestra del rocanroll, en un viejo carcamán. Por supuesto, esa idea no cabe en su mente -el rock es rebeldía, excesos, libertad- es más fácil pensar que un grupo de chantas, metidos hasta el tuétano en una gran estafa, lo han encerrado en un asilo, convirtiéndolo así en un "abuelo".
Como en esas películas de Disney, en las que el padre o la madre del pequeño e inocente protagonista muere apenas comienza la historia, en esta novela el periodista pagará ese atrevimiento suyo del entusiasmo -ese intento de rescatar a aquella estrella querida del rock, ahora cubierta de moho y medicación antipsicótica- con la pérdida de su reputación profesional, su estabilidad emocional, y por supuesto con el vaciamiento de sus ya endebles bolsillos, cosa que lo obligará a refugiarse en la titiritera, omnipresente y siempre patética ayuda de su madre.
Pero el rocanroll le ha enseñado que cambiar el mundo, empieza por ti, que We are the world, y we will, we will rock you. Y que es muy feo estar solo y triste aquí en este mundo abandonado. Así que él no se venderá, no le soltará la mano a su ídolo en los momentos aciagos.

La invitación es a dar apenas un par de pasos luego de los cuales quien lee se verá dentro de una trama fascinante, angustiante y humorística al mismo tiempo. En principio pensamos que tal vez estamos por pisar el suelo firme y frecuentado ya de los estereotipos del rock. El rock como un significante infinito que, en palabras de Pedro Saborido: "Está muy instalada esta idea del absoluto: el rock es esto o el rock es esto otro o el rock ya no es lo que era. El problema es que yo no soy el que era"-dándonos pie a lo que el paso del tiempo, de los años constituyen a una parte central de la novela. Y al caer en esa trampa somos precipitados en realidad a sus mundos subterráneos: artífices y artistas fallidos o falsos, sus cronistas a medio camino, sus sabios monolguistas de ginebra y cocaína, sus chamuyeros y comerciantes sin negocio. La perspectiva del narrador protagonista en la figura de Fuentes funciona con una potencia abrumadora que puede asociarse al esperpento y la ironía de un Juan Filloy como a la potencia arltiana de un grito hacia la existencia. Precisamente por momentos del relato casi como en Roberto Arlt el fracaso ilumina cierta magia de la vida, solamente revelada a los imposibilitados de aprovecharla. Al mismo tiempo su actualidad: con flechazos disparados hacia la crueldad ultra contemporánea de contextos sociales y culturales que navegan hacia la atrocidad y que pueden reflejarse aun en el diario de mañana. Guiños, indicios, señales inter y extra textuales hacia generaciones atravesadas por fenómenos culturales, políticos y periodísticos solo agregan potencia de fuego a esta historia indetenible, perfectamente bizarra que -entre sus tantos instantes cinematográficos- parece revivir (de nuevo pensando en Arlt) ese reclamo y a la vez denuncia que en el Juguete rabioso sentencia "dios es la alegría de vivir". El desafío es dejarse marear por esta redacción empedernida cuya poética esconde el extrañamiento que despierta a preguntarse en qué absurdo sueño consiste nuestra existencia, y acaso sonreír ante la imposibilidad de esa respuesta.
