Le courage, le raisonnement, ces deux qualités essentiellement viriles, avaient chez lui devancé les années. Ralph avait vu pour la première fois l'homme gris dans la prison de la cour de police de Kilburn. Tout ce que cet homme, qui lui avait parlé le cher idiome de son pays, lui avait prédit, s'était réalisé. Ralph avait donc confiance dans l'homme gris comme dans sa mère, et lorsque celui-ci lui dit, tandis que la voiture roulait: - Mon petit Ralph, seras-tu bien obéissant ? - Oh ! oui, monsieur, répondit-il. - Feras-tu tout ce que je voudrai ? - Oui, monsieur. Le cab traversa de nouveau Waterloo-Bridge, remonta les beaux quartiers jusqu'à Holborn-street et prit la route d'Hampsteadt.
About the Author: Pierre Alexis, Joseph, Ferdinand, vicomte de Ponson du Terrail, né le 8 juillet 1829 à Montmaur et mort le 10 janvier 1871 à Bordeaux, est un écrivain populaire français et l'un des maîtres du roman-feuilleton. Il est célèbre pour son personnage Rocambole. Il a écrit 200 romans et feuilletons en vingt ans. Pierre Allexi Joseph Ferdinand de Ponson nait à Montmaur dans la propriété de campagne de son grand-père maternel Pierre Toscan du Terrail le 8 juillet 1829 de Noble Ferdinand Marie de Ponson et de Marie Suzanne Bénédicte Toscan du Terrail. Ses parents étaient alors domiciliés à Simiane d'où étaient originaires les Ponson. Son arrière-grand-père, côté maternel, Jacques Toscan du Plantier, notaire à Montmaur, est par ailleurs l'ancêtre de Daniel Toscan du Plantier. Il fut élève au collège d'Apt de 1838 à 1844. Ponson du Terrail commence à écrire vers 1850. Ses premiers textes s'inscrivent dans la tradition du roman gothique. Par exemple, son roman La Baronne trépassée (1852) est une histoire de vengeance située autour de 1723 dans la Forêt-Noire. Il s'agit, dans la même veine que La Ville vampire de Paul Féval, d'une parodie des histoires de vampires. Pendant plus de vingt ans, il fournira en feuilletons toute la presse parisienne (L'Opinion nationale, La Patrie, Le Moniteur, Le Petit Journal, etc.). Écrivant très vite et sans se relire, il parsème ses romans de phrases fantaisistes. C'est en 1857 qu'il entame la rédaction du premier roman du cycle Rocambole (cycle parfois connu sous le titre Les Drames de Paris) L'Héritage mystérieux, qui paraît dans le journal La Patrie. Il vise principalement à mettre à profit le succès des Mystères de Paris d'Eugène Sue. Rocambole devient un grand succès populaire, procurant à Ponson du Terrail une source de revenus importante et durable. Au total, il rédigera neuf romans mettant en vedette Rocambole. En août 1870, le romancier vient d'entamer la rédaction d'un nouvel épisode de la saga de Rocambole lorsque Napoléon III capitule devant les Allemands. Fidèle à l'image du chevalier Bayard, il quitte Paris pour Orléans, où il forme un corps de francs-tireurs. Mais il est vite obligé de s'enfuir à Bordeaux, les Allemands ayant incendié son château. Il meurt à Bordeaux en 1871, laissant inachevée la saga de Rocambole. Il est enterré au cimetière de Montmartre à Paris. Ponson du Terrail en Orléanais
