About the Book

English summary: The Rappolsteiner Parzifal (Cod. Donaueschingen 97), which has generally been viewed as an inheritor and imitator of Wolfram von Eschenbachs Parzifal that included useless additions, has very recently been described as a special case of compilation. For their Parzifal, the production team around Claus Wisse and Philipp Colin included in their version excerpts from the canonical Continuations of Chretien de Troyes Conte-du-Graal, as well as other Old French and Middle High German texts, but they retained the epic-linear narrative structure. In this way, a grail-narrative developed with irreconcilable contradictions in the plot. This study assesses the contradictions not as a flaw, but as an essential feature of the work, and develops a method for interpreting the text which is based in the modern concept of complementarity. Complementarity serves as a valuable instrument for the investigation of multiple contexts, which, in this case, revolve around the fundamental narrative elements of knight, love, and the grail. This work examines the identity and disagreements of individual episodes, through which the structure of replication of other texts first takes shape. Chapter by chapter, the diverse patterns are viewed in consideration of the new contexts that develop in the Rappolsteiner Parzifal, in order to make apparent the referentiality to the most important stages of Parzival and Gawain as they were drawn from the framing texts of Wolfram and Chretien. German description: Der 'Rappoltsteiner Parzifal' (Cod.
