Dies wirft die Frage nach den Konsequenzen des Nutzungsverhaltens auf. Aktuelle Studien weisen mehrheitlich auf einen negativen Einfluss auf die Zufriedenheit mit dem Körperbild von jungen Frauen hin, berichten aber auch kontroverse Ergebnisse (Holmstrom, 2004; Grabe, Ward & Hyde, 2008). In der vorliegenden Studie wird anhand von gesunden Probandinnen und Patientinnen mit einer Essstörung untersucht, ob tatsächlich ein Zusammenhang zwischen dem Ausmaß des täglichen Medienkonsums und der Unzufriedenheit mit dem Körperbild besteht. Vermutet wird, dass je höher der Medienkonsum ist, desto negativer ist auch das Körperbild der jungen Frauen, da diese sich mutmasslich von dem in Medien propagierten Schönheitsideal unter Druck gesetzt fühlen und ihr eigenes Aussehen nach der Konfrontation mit diesem negativer bewerten. Zudem wird untersucht, ob eine experimentelle Medienexposition einen direkten Effekt auf die Zufriedenheit mit dem Körperbild hat und ob dieser Einfluss stärker ist, je häufiger eine junge Frau in ihrem Alltag Medien konsumiert. Die Stimmung zum Zeitpunkt des Medienkonsums und der Inhalt der Medien werden ebenfalls betrachtet, da sie den Zusammenhang möglicherweise mitbeeinflussen.
