" As estórias e a história de Rio do Braço nos são contadas em terceira pessoa pela personagem Cecílio, que ora dá voz ao povo da cidade, a alguém em particular, ora personifica o próprio município, como se casas, ruas, rios etc. confidenciassem o que ali se passou em um determinado recorte de tempo. O romance assume ares de um realismo mágico a la García Márquez exatamente no trecho em que Cecílio decide sair desta para melhor. Seu corpo, estirado em um banco de tábua, foi crescendo, crescendo, tomando conta da cidade. Em versos, o autor passa em revista todo o processo da produção cacaueira que tanta fama e riqueza emprestou à região, tornando-a, por exemplo, cenário de romances do conterrâneo Jorge Amado, e até de novela de televisão, no caso, "Renascer", de 1993, escrita por Benedito Ruy Barbosa e dirigida por Luiz Fernando Carvalho e Mauro Mendonça Filho. Os personagens excêntricos que cada cidade de interior tem estão lá também, em Rio do Braço, nas figuras dos paus-d'água Verdião e Merquinho e Jeep Doido. Rio do Braço é um tributo que Osman Matos presta à cidade onde nasceu e ao tempo em que ali viveu. É também denúncia, por tudo que ali ruiu. Impressionam a memória prodigiosa do autor, certamente apoiada por intensa pesquisa, como também a minuciosa descrição de fatos que só quem morou em cidade pequena de interior irá sentir, a exemplo da chegada de ciganos, circos e parques de diversão. O livro finaliza com reportagens e artigos que formam um painel informativo interessante sobre a singularidade da "terra do cacau".
