Wisse, da� allen ein Edler im Wege steht.ich bin kein Historiker und kein Philologe der Musik. Es reizt mich nicht, in Bibliotheken und Archiven nach Material zu st�bern, das l�ngst Be kanntes um mehr oder minder Belangloses vermehrt, und ich habe f�r diese Art der Arbeit nur dort Verst�ndnis, wo es ihr gl�ckt, aus bisher unbekannten oder unbeachteten Zusammenhangen auf Neues zu schlie�en, das Bild eines geliebten Meisters umzuzeichnen oder eines seiner Werke in ein ungeahntes Licht zu r�cken. Aber sie reizt mich nicht. Viel eher erschiene es mir ergiebig, auf dem Fundament des Erforschten und �ber lieferten ruhend, solch eine gro�e Erscheinung aus der Perspektive des Heute zu betrachten, das Schaffen eines gro�en Tondichters auf seine wahre Lebendigkeit zu pr�fen, sein Leben und sein Werk in Beziehung zu setzen und beides, dichterisch wahrhaft geschaut und gestaltet, zu gegenwartvoller N�he zu bringen. Noch weit mehr und ganz anders aber entspricht es meinem Verlangen, im Dienst eines lebenden K�nstlers zu stehen, zumal eines solchen, den ich nicht nur durch das Medium seines Werkes, sondern durch das seiner menschlichen Atmosph�re verstehen und lieben 1emte, den ich unmittelbar erleben durfte und von dem ich mehr, zum wenigsten aber anderes aussagen kann als andere; weil sich diese andern in der Meinung, dann objektiver zu sein, k�nstlich distanzieren und sich dabei in Wirklichkeit meistens nur falsch einstellen; haupts�chlich aber, weil es mich einzig lockt, nur Selbstempfangenes zu erz�hlen, nichts nach fremden Berichten oder irgendwelcher "literatur; nur von solchen, deren Schaffen und deren Person mich das Gl�ck nahebrachte, und nur so, wie ich es miterlebt habe: als unmittelbares Dokument eines Gleich zeitigen. Andere sehen ihre Aufgabe anders und werden sie vielleicht besser erf�llen, als ich die meine. F �r mich gibt es keine frohere, als f�r K�nstler einzustehen, die mir in ihrem Werk und ihrer Menschlichkeit viel gegeben haben; fur sie Zeugnis abzulegen, ihr Wesen, ihre besondere Art anderen deutlich zu machen, zu ihrer Kunst hinzuf�hren, nicht durch Zergliederung, sondern durch Darstellung der von ihnen kommenden Be reicherung ein Mittler zu sein, die Empfangsbereiten, aber auch die Z�gern den und Widerstrebenden etwas von dem Wunder ihrer Existenz sp�ren zu lassen, den Abseitsstehenden Lust zu machen, in den einzigartigen magischen Kreis zu treten, der das Wesentliche jedes K�nstlers und Men schen umschlie�t, und des Rufens nicht m�de zu werden.
