Previously this book was published under the title 'Scientific Weed Management' in 1984, required revision because during all these about 12 years, numerous new findings were documented in the subject, both in India and abroad. In India alone over 500 Research papers, largely on the applied aspects of weed management in agriculture, were published annually. At the global Level huge volumes of new researches in weed science, particularly on its basic aspects, were added to the literature. However, neither it is claimed here, nor it was humanly possible to include all these new findings in the present revised edition. (Nevertheless, serious attempts were made to incorporate the latest data-supported weed management Recommendations from chiefly the Indian literature, including the various research project reports.) The rather limited foreign literature available on Hand was used mainly to update the chemical and Physiological aspects of herbicides, while maintaining some unchanged but informative old findings for the benefit of the reader. Chapters relating to the Biology of weeds and their ecological management have been revised, with new examples and sketches. This has been done mainly on the Bases of the added personal Experiences of the author.Besides the above, a completely revised Chapter on the Methodology of conducting and reporting field research on weed management in agriculture, alongwith some new data tables, has been added in this revised Edition for the benefit of the Young weed scientists. The appendices of the book have also been updated.It is hoped that the readers looking for the latest in weed science, particularly in relation to Agriculture in the tropics and subtropics, shall be able to use the present publication to their advantage as a text book, research guide, and field manual at various levels over the next decade, whence of course, another revision of The previous edition of this book, 'Modern Weed Management' was published in 1998 and reprinted in the year 2002. During these about six years since publication of its last edition, a Sea - change in weed Science research has been envisaged, both in India and abroad. The Country has faced new weed problems and our worthy weed scientists have come-up with new, farmer-oriented Solutions to these, giving a further boost to Agricultural Productivity in the country. Battery of additional research papers have been published in journals devoted fully or partially to weed science. Therefore, it was considered desirable to bring out a revised edition of the book, incorporating the latest research findings and recommendations in weed management in the country.The above objectives have been achieved in the current edition of Modem Weed Management by providing an exhaustive, 50 pages Chapter-wise Addenda, equipped with the latest subject matter, particularly on new herbicide molecules, their characteristics, structures, and uses; latest herbicide recommendations in field crops, vegetables, plantation crops, orchards, etc; and modern Views on varied other aspects of weed science. Also, the Appendices have been grossly updated, especially in respect of weed flora, herbicide commercial products, and herbicide availability sources in India. It is suggested that while going through a particular chapter of the book readers should read simultaneously the respective addenda to know of the recent most research achievements in the subject.
