Zwei Kontrahenten messen sich miteinander, ob im Film, im Roman oder in der Geschichtsschreibung. Der Zweikampf bietet dem Rezipienten die besten Identifikationsmöglichkeiten. So benutzt auch Livius das certamen singulare, den Zweikampf, als Topos für sein bedeutendes Werk der Geschichtsschreibung Ab Urbe Condita.Der Schriftsteller und Geschichtsschreiber Livius lebte und arbeitete hauptsächlich im ersten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert. Er war ein rigoroser Verfechter der "guten alten" Werte und wollte mit seinem Werk genau diese vermitteln. Daher wird seine Geschichtsschreibung oft auch unter psychologisierenden Aspekten betrachtet, da er immer wieder Einzelcharaktere in den Vordergrund stellt, die genau diese ur-römischen Tugenden wie Tapferkeit, Pflichtbewusstsein, Aufopferung fürs Ganze und Götterehrfurcht, vertreten. In dieser Form kreiert Livius einen moralischen Leitfaden und einen flammenden Appell für die Republik. In den Kapitel 40 bis 45 des 28. Buches dominiert das Senatsrededuell von Quintus Fabius Maximus und Publius Cornelius Scipio im Jahre 205 v. Chr. Zum Ende des Zweiten Punischen Krieges hin geht es um die Frage, ob Scipio sein gewünschtes Mandat bekommt, nach Afrika zu reisen, um Hannibal in dessen eigener Heimat zu bekämpfen und zu schlagen. In der Beschäftigung mit Livius als Geschichtsschreiber streift man die grundsätzliche Frage nach der "Objektivität" historischer Darstellung. In der Zeit der Aufklärung fordert die Moderne vom Historiker, die geschichtlichen Fakten in einem neutralen Licht zu präsentieren, damit der Leser sich seine eigene Meinung zu den vergangenen Ereignissen und ihren Folgen bilden kann.
