South African Idol ist ein beliebtes lokales Beispiel. In Anlehnung an die britische Sendung "Pop Idols" verspricht die Show dem jungen Star, der den Wettbewerb gewinnt, einen Aufstieg. Die Show ist zu einem Gesprächsthema unter jungen Menschen in Südafrika geworden, die nach dem Begriff des "Erfolgs" und des "Prominentenstatus" streben, der durch die Show gefördert wird. In dieser Arbeit wird ein kulturwissenschaftlicher Rahmen genutzt, um die Beziehung zwischen diesem Sendetext und seinem Konsum durch ein Township-Publikum in der Nähe von Grahamstown im Ostkap zu untersuchen. Meine Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Bedeutung, die junge Menschen der Show in einem Kontext von Arbeitslosigkeit und knappen sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Ressourcen beimessen. Ausgehend von einem kritischen Celebrity-Studien-Rahmen, der versteht, wie Bedeutungen erzeugt werden, versucht diese Studie zu verstehen, wie die von der Show angebotenen Bedeutungen das Selbstverständnis der Township-Zuschauer als aufstrebende Jugendliche beeinflussen.
