Le fermier général Dupin avait Rousseau à son service et réfutait en trois gros volumes l'esprit des lois de Montesquieu. Pâris-duverney fondait l'école militaire et inventait un fusil perfectionné. Le génevois Necker, dirigeant la compagnie des Indes de concert avec MM. De Sancé et de Castries, réhabilitait la banque a force d'intelligence et de pro bité, et le brevet de notoriété que lui conférait le public, que lui confirmaient une femme vertueuse et une fille éminente, le désignait pour le ministère. La magistrature était loin de rester étrangère au mouvement général elle entrait en lutte, tantôt contre la cour, tantôt contre le clergé. Il est vrai que les Parlements s'étaient dis crédités par leur triste conduite dans l'affaire du chevalier de la Barre, où des plaisanerîoe de jeunes gens avaient été traitées de sacrilèges et punies comme au temps de saint Louis; dans celle de Calas, que tant de gravures, tant de poésies, tant de souscriptions avaient popularisée; dans celle de Sirven, qui, justifié, amnistié, rentrant en possession de ses biens, n'avait a recevoir, vu t'énor mité des frais de procédure, que la somme incroyable de 38 livres 8 sous 6 deniers la raillerie acérée et sanglante de Voltaire avait signalé ces juges durs et obstinés a la défiance du pouvoir et au' mépris des masses. On publiait maintes brochures sur les jésuites, sur la réforme des lois, sur la vénalité des charges, sur le divorce. Un jeune magistrat grenoblois, Servan, rallié à la cause de la philo sophie, écrivait uu discours concernant l'administration de la jus üce criminelle; un Breton, l'avocat général de La Chalotais, combat tait la société de Jésus, traçait un plan d'éducation nationale, réclamait la liberté du commerce des grains; Dupaty, président a Bordeaux, n'était ni moins éclairé, ni moins ami des innovations. Des avocats de talent, Loyseau de Mauleon, �lie de Beaumont, Tronçon du Coudray, Target, Corbier, Cochin, honoraient le bar rem; Linguet, lui, s'y faisait remarquer par ses paradoxes. Ennemi implacable de la Harpe, journaliste violent, orgueilleux à l'excès, il préconisait déjà le despotisme des Césars; mais il imaginait peut ètre les télégraphes aériens dix ans avant Chappe. Le besoin des améliorations se produisait en tout et pour tout, non pas toujours sans résistance. Le lieutenant de police Sartines faisait - il éclairer les rues de Paris au moyen de lanternes d'un nouveau modèle les épigramme et les chansons pleuvaient sur lui de droite et de gau che, et cette diffusion croissante des lumières mécontentait beau coup certaines gens auxquels elle était nuisible, notamment les amoureux et les filous.
