El 11 de julio de 1897, el cientí fico Salomon August André e, el ingeniero Knut Fræ nkel y el fotó grafo Nils Strindberg se embarcaron en el Ö rnen, un globo aerostá tico con el que pretendí an explorar el Polo Norte. La increí ble expedició n, seguida con apasionado interé s por la sociedad sueca de la é poca, tuvo un desenlace fatal: despué s de tres dí as de vuelo, el globo descendió hasta caer en un banco de hielo y los tres intré pidos aventureros subsistieron unos meses hasta fallecer. Probablemente, la aventura del Ö rnen se habrí a ido desvaneciendo en la memoria escrita y oral europea si no fuera porque, 33 añ os despué s, en una nueva expedició n á rtica, se halló el ú ltimo campamento de los exploradores suecos. Entre sus pertenencias se encontraba todo el material fotográ fico que habí a ido elaborando Nils Strindberg y, de repente, la cuasi leyenda del Ö rnen se hizo imagen. Esta historia es la que da origen al presente coloquio en dos ensayos entre el fotó grafo y crí tico Joan Fontcuberta y el filó sofo Xavier Antich. El viaje del Ö rnen y el legado de negativos fotográ ficos de Strindberg -- deteriorados como un cuerpo herido-- sirven a Fontcuberta para reflexionar sobre la humanidad de la fotografí a y la perdurabilidad de las imá genes en una é poca en la que parecen haber perdido precisamente su cará cter material esencial. Para el pensador, las fotografí as pueden llegar a ser tan enigmá ticas como la vida: nacen en un instante, fijan un momento y, a medida que pasa el tiempo, adquieren nuevas dimensiones vinculadas a la memoria. Todo ello lleva a Antich a reflexionar sobre la propia construcció n de la mirada y la memoria visual no solo a travé s de la fotografí a sino tambié n a travé s del arte y la literatura. Dos ensayos incisivos que aportan una inteligente revisió n del papel de la fotografí a en nuestra saturada cultura audiovisual actual y, má s allá de los lí mites del aná lisis fotográ fico, nos regalan una estimulante exploració n de " lo humano" en tiempos de algoritmos e inteligencia artificial.
About the Author: Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) es uno de los pocos artistas españ oles a quien el MoMA de Nueva York ha dedicado una exposició n monográ fica. Su obra se halla en colecciones como las del Centre Georges Pompidou de Parí s, el Stedelijk Museum de á msterdam, el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York, el Art Institute de Chicago o el MACBA de Barcelona, entre otros. Aparte de su trabajo artí stico ha desarrollado una intensa actividad de reflexió n, comisariado de exposiciones, investigació n histó rica y docencia. Ha sido profesor invitado en la Harvard University y en Le Fresnoy. Centre National des Arts Contemporains, y actualmente enseñ a en la Facultad de Comunicació n de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Joan Fontcuberta es tambié n autor de El beso de Judas. Fotografí a y verdad (1997) y La cá mara de Pandora. La fotografí @ despué s de la fotografí a (2010) ambos tambié n publicados por Editorial Gustavo Gili. En 2011 ganó el Premio Nacional de Ensayo por La cá mara de Pandora y, en 2013, ganó el Premio Internacional de Fotografí a Hasselblad
