About the Book

Sébastien Maréchal, a man in his mid fifties, returns to his neglected training stables in Provence. He left the area twenty-four years ago after his young wife died when she had a bad fall off her horse, leaving him a widower with a four-year-old daughter, Cécile. He is now estranged from his daughter who has become a fitness instructor. En route to his parents' home La Fontenelle, Sébastien stops by Les Jonquières and finds the property deserted and in need of repair. His father Pierre and stepmother Sylvia are happy to see him and it emerges that he has arrived back just in time, for Pierre was on the verge of selling Les Jonquières to the developer Morgan. On the second day of his return and while driving to the nearby village, Sébastien hits a large white dog. Fortunately the dog isn't harmed badly, just a few bruises. Even though the dog, Métèque, belongs the proprietor of the local café, the veterinarian informs Sébastien he usually roams around on his own, being an 'everybody's friend'. The dog reminds Sébastien of Belle, the dog he had as a child. Sébastien finds five men to work for him and they help him restore Les Jonquières to its former glory. The developer Morgan is not happy with Sébastien's plans and thwarts him on several occasions, through arson and sabotage. When the police is not expeditious enough in finding the culprit, Sébastien hires private investigator Jules Garnier to help him. Sébastien's ex-wife Angéline drops off Cécile's five-year-old son Thomas to stay with Pierre and Sylvia when Cécile goes to London to attend a conference. Cécile hates horses and she forbids her small son to ride the animals. Thomas, however, soon loves to be among the horses at his great-grandparents home and it doesn't take long for Sébastien to buy him his own pony and he starts teaching him to ride. During a heavy storm it becomes clear that 74-year-old Pierre has problems with his heart, and he is soon being admitted to hospital for check-ups and treatment. This event brings Pierre's other son François, Sébastien's younger brother, back home, too. It soon emerges that François has marital problems and is in great debt because of his ever spending wife Louise. He had actually hoped for a sale of Les Jonquières to bring him the much needed money. One day, Cécile returns and when she hears her grandmother's account of how well Thomas has been getting on with her father, she drives to Les Jonquières where she witnesses Thomas in the middle of a riding lesson. She snatches her son from the saddle and drags him back with her, leaving her father Sébastien behind, bemused and hurt. Not only is Les Jonquières under threat, but a reconciliation with his daughter seems further away than ever ...
