About the Author: After time at a retreat where Roger realized the importance of surrendering his life to God, he vigorously grasped the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Roger began an intense Bible study. His questions challenged those around him to do their own digging. He could get lost in his own private worship in the midst of the crowd. Songs in worship were a vehicle to transport him into the presence of God. Roger accepted a temporary transfer to Washington where he spent spare time in Bible study. He gained a vision and God's call to a special task and began immediately to walk in the light he had. Roger began a mission called "Gadarenes", because he identified with the demoniac's experience. He had been freed and now sat at the feet of Jesus. The ministry began as a free Christian school, dedicated to teaching people who had dropped out of high school. Roger rented a house in "The War Zone", a poverty stricken and crime filled area of Albuquerque. Most of his clients were hungry, so he fed them. He remodeled the house and garage to provide sleeping quarters for a dozen men. He lived with them and showed them Jesus' love. A few churches contributed a little, but mostly he asked God for support. As the mission grew, he needed something productive for his clients, so he and the men held bake sales. Most funds came as miraculous answers to prayer. With regular Bible teaching and discipline, a number of people found new life in Jesus. Many more were helped in other ways. They moved to Belen, New Mexico where Roger worked with local state inmates and saw the need for a "half-way house" for men adjust to non-prison society and restart their lives. He purchased property in central New Mexico, where he could safely house those released to him and called it Morningstar Ranch. It housed staff and a number of paroled clients. Some clients continued the work with new clients. Roger loved all the men and cared for them as a father would. He interceded with authorities, counseled the clients, and forgave them when they stole from him. He prayed with them, helped them get off drugs, and led many to faith in Christ. In November of 1997, Roger received word of his mother's severe medical condition and went to visit her in North Carolina. He became sick on the trip and was hospitalized when he arrived. Within weeks, his mother recovered completely and he was called home to spend eternity with Jesus.
