RETRATO HABLADO es un poemario cuyos temas son la memoria familiar, los viajes (físicos y espirituales), el amor, la muerte y los juegos gramaticales que su autora concibe a lo largo de cuatro libros o secciones. En la primera parte (Álbum de familia), la quietud contemplativa de un enfocar centellea su flash para apresar lo que queda en ese congelamiento de la imagen y sobre el que Montiel Spluga fantasea buscando tal vez ir más allá de los secretos, de lo oculto, de lo guardado en el perfil familiar.En la segunda parte del poemario (Libro de viajes), la poeta bocetea verdaderas estampas de viaje que recoge como turista y que a veces se convierten en un intento -sin proponérselo- de "greguerías" a lo Gómez de la Serna (como cuando habla del avión, al que le endilga cariños infantiles en su observación, o cuando dice en números infinitos "Entre mis ojos y los tuyos/ hay un puente colgante/ que une nuestras vidas" ) y que también enlaza con notas históricas del cine y de la literatura, del arte, nombres que sólo ellos, por sí mismos, constituyen una referencia grata a la memoria del lector avezado. Sin ser como tal un libro que verse sobre el amor, quedan aquí testimoniadas finalmente breves confesiones de pertinencia sobre el tema, rasgos de su vida quizás, pero, en todo caso, de exquisitez en lo expresivo. Por último, en esta segunda sección del libro una reflexión insólita ("Yo, de ochenta") la ubica en pensamientos reposados que adelanta frente a un espejo imaginario, pero del que todavía dista mucho realmente para llegar allí.Montiel Spluga nos lleva a convivir en su tercera sección (En defensa propia) con un mundo muy personal, muy íntimo. Abre las puertas de su vida privada para permitirnos auscultar sus más caras sensaciones y sentires. Hay aquí en ciertos poemas ("Contrato nupcial", "Desencuentro", o incluso "Las reglas del juego") una definición del amor bastante madura, decantada, que nivela con la realidad. En mucho de su poesía encontramos una suerte de "barroquismo" en cuanto vemos ideas atrincheradas, contenidos o esencias encerrados, escondidos ex professo dentro de las palabras, como si se tratara de una autoprotección encapsulada como sucede en "Carta abierta" en contraposición de otros poemas ("Carta de identidad" o "Los cuarenta") donde más bien la expresión se torna llana y explícita, directa. Aquí lo femenino se aborda con espontaneidad y sencillez. Pero esta idea contrasta curiosamente con ciertas posturas rebeldes que leemos en "Dilema de la homo sapiens sapiens", "Yo también tengo miedo" o "Manifiesto". No hace uso, a lo Góngora, de terminologías rebuscadas o giros engolados, adornos arquitectónicos lingüísticos y arabescos del idioma para esconder en ellos la idea; por el contrario, el barroquismo que encontramos en algunos de sus poemas es llano, sencillo, ingenioso. Teje y enhebra elementos simples y cotidianos de la realidad. El verso discurre escondido, el pensar y los sentimientos se truecan en un auténtico poetizar de la vida. Las personas (en cuestión de número, ya sea la primera, la segunda o la tercera) se trasmutan, las identidades se endosan de una a otra, se intercambian, se plasma un miedo o cualquier otra realidad poética tratada. En Lecciones de gramática (la cuarta y última sección del libro) pide a los escritores, a los poetas, ser auténticos en el oficio, ser honestos: "El poema certero/ es aquel que reposa/ bajo un túmulo de palimpsestos/ el que no es inmediato/" o "El verso es una joya facetada/ que no admite impurezas, / (....) Escribir, por ejemplo, la palabra lágrima / está de más si el llanto del poeta/ no ha sido verdadero," (en "Poemática" ). Montiel Spluga parece trazarse un paralelismo entre escritura y realidad, asumiendo obviamente que el artista de la palabra (en este caso Dostoyevski) no es el que necesariamente tiene que asesinar, como lo hace en "Crimen y Castigo" su personaje Raskolnikov.
