Analizándola desde la "teoría funcionalista" es un elemento clave para la estratificación social en un contexto en el que la desigualdad de acceso a los servicios educativos entre la población es real y donde la cultura del conocimiento tiene una naturaleza estratificada fundamentada por la pertenenencia de clase. Consiste en una socialización metódica de la generación joven a través de las influencias que ejercen las generaciones adultas. El sistema educativo es un mecanismo de selección de manera imparcial de los individuos, certificando sus diferencias de logro y acreditándolos así mediante un fenómeno denominado como "meritocracia", para desempeñar unas determinadas funciones y ocupar diversas posiciones en la estructura y jerarquía social. La escuela es un reflejo de las desigualdades sociales y su función es la producción y reproducción del capital simbólico y cultural. Así cuando estos están desigualmente distribuidos, la convierten en un mecanismo activo de reproducción de la desigualdad social. A través de una investigación de tipo cualitativo y cuantitativo se busca identificar la medida en que se reproducen las nenesidades socioeconómicas del alumnado a través de la educación y como distintas instituciones sociales intervienen en dicho proceso. Para ello se han tomado como muestra el alumnado de 4° de la ESO de la Comarca ourensana de Verín, sus familias y los distintos agentes sociales comarcales implicados en la educación.
