About the Book

Subtitle Note: For technical reasons, the paperback has an earlier subtitle, "A Romantic Dystopian Satire." The e-book has the same content but a new subtitle: "A Romantic Comedy and Political Thriller."

An amusing young romance intersects with an underground freedom movement ten years after the US was transformed into a repressive one-party totalitarian socialist system.

The story is set in 2033, ten years after the "Soft Coup" in which the US became the "Republic of Equality" under one-party totalitarian socialism, institutionalized critical race theory, and a ubiquitous system of social credits and demerits. Conservatives were suppressed after they were persistently attacked as racists, fascists and inciters of sedition, and were blacklisted, doxed, harassed, and kicked off social media. They lost jobs and faced mass political prosecutions.

But by 2033, most people are privately cynical. The country and most people are impoverished. Yet the elite socialist political class is living higher than ever. Most people privately want to return to free speech, free enterprise, equal opportunities, and representative government. But few are willing to do anything as risky as joining the underground. Everyone fears losing social credits or jobs or being sent to the Alaskan Reserve, a secretive massive gulag prison system for the worst deplorables.

Tom is a recent college grad and a rising star in the Party. Izzy, a college senior and member of the underground, believes Tom may have hidden depths and wants to recruit him. They start going out while being careful about gradually revealing cynical thoughts. Can their playful romance become a trusting relationship of shared beliefs? Will the deepening rivalry between the two marginally competent leaders of the Party provide an opportunity for the underground to take action?

The interwoven storylines are paced to hold a reader's interest as the characters and events develop, with humor and surprises, into thriller action in the second half.

"What is even more remarkable about this social commentary is how completely satisfyingly it explores a blooming romantic relationship ... brims with a non-intimidating intelligence ... quite an interesting storyteller." VINCENT DUBLADO, READERS' FAVORITE

"Hejna's novel is adept at tackling touchy subjects like race relations head-on...An often blunt satirical tale that's genuinely edgy." KIRKUS REVIEWS

"Readers will find themselves completely immersed in the book because of great story-building and characterization ... details are given in just the right amount at the right timing ... a good thoughtful read." RISAH SALAZAR, READERS' FAVORITE
